Did either of these tracks require re-reads?  If so, I'd say that they are probably not accurate.

This looks very promising. I'm using it at this moment with a PX-716UF on a disc that I had given up for dead and it is ripping it accurately.

I have a very minor feature request: Can you add the cddb/freedb-style eight-character disc ID as a File Naming Element? Or better yet, the 28-character CD index as used by Musicbrainz? Or both?

I already have my own backend process for encoding audio and editing and storing metadata but I would like to use this as a front end for ripping. I have managed to script EAC to be a front end using AutoIt and I'm hoping it will not be difficult to do the same thing with this. Using a disc ID for a directory name instead of artist/title will make it easier to feed into this process.

So you mean to ask how secure is spoon's new ripper?  I can't answer that but can suggest that you see what EAC does with the track.  Make sure you have it enabled to use null samples in CRC calculations and you can compare the CRCs directly (provided the drive is offset corrected in EAC).

1 frame isn't much to re-rip, but you could be getting a consistent error.  I see you're also using C2.  I'm not sure what to say about this.  Spoon's seemed to have changed his opinion (and code?) regarding C2 since he first announced the software.  I'm curious to see what he has to say.  Did you also try EAC?

Spoon, I know dMC is still in alpha, but in your opinion is it ready to start being used for archiving?? Any outstanding issues with the flac encoder?

None that I know, the ripper is almost complete and for flac you can use the verify option after ripping.

Consistent errors and non are the thing to worry about here.  When they both can be implemented, reliably then we are good to go.  If you use the new ripper without a drive that does GOOD c2 detection, then the only benifit besides Spoons interface, is the interpolation, which will make some errors inaudible.  But if you have a drive with good c2 detection, and use this ripper with ultra passes, c2, and re rip then yes, TRUST THE GREEN CHECK =))))  then theres accurateRip, plus when its there.  Nessesary if you don't have c2 in my mind...

I did some more testing with my small sampling of problem discs using my PX-716A.  I have to say that I too am becomming a believer, especially with the C2 performance.  There is still one more disc I want to try to see how well it does compared to PlexTools, but so far it is beating out EAC.  I have to think this is because of the use of C2 during re-reads.

I did not get these kinds of results with r5.

Unfortunately I still can't use C2 with my Sony CDU5221.

If you rip twice in secure what are the CRCs (enable that column by right clicking on ripping status at the top. If you rip twice in burst what are the crcs?

Through out my testing (with how c2 is implemented in R12) c2 only did good, the thing to remember about c2 detection is it is an unknown quantity across drives, some might not report all errors, I see it as an extra help, not a hinderance no matter which drive it is on.

Ok, I tested a problem track, track 7 (Where The Streets Have No Name) from the CD (U2 - The Best Of 1980-1990) some more. I ripped it 5 times with different tools and settings.
One remarkable thing is that for the 1st time the secure with c2 setting ended with a secure rip and corresponding CRC. (I ripped this track with this setting for over 10 times.)

An other remark is that EAC says the drive does not cache after its drive features test while dMC says the cache is 36KB.

EAC does not need to flush the cache for drives that use less than ~63kB.  This is why it says that it doesn't cache.

I use a BenQ DW-1650 to rip my CD collection, I use these settings in R12.

What do you think of my settings? Would you change any of them to get better results?

I would put max re reads at 700 like spoon said.  Did you detect cache for that drive?  Are you sure you want interpolation? 

I would buy a good c2 capable drive for 50 bucks and use that.  The gain in eliminating consistent errors is worth it.

I ran the "Detect Cache" option for this drive and got this result;

"Drive does not appear to cache, no cache clearing will be used."
"Detected cache size 0 KB (0 frames)."

I thought the interpolation option was meant for drives with no C2 like mine? What are the downsides of using interpolation with this drive?

Hello,

I am using the current dMC-r12-alpha7 version of this program on Windows XP Pro SP2

This program is very interesting, and looks like something I will use soon.  A few caveats exist however that I have come across, in addition I have a few questions.

The Read into Lead-in Lead-out option has 2 options listed:  1) SCSI Pass through (SPT), and 2) Windows Internal [for limited accounts],

I am using a Plextor PX-716SA, as well as a Plextor PX-716UF, they support overreading into lead in and lead out

Option 2 is not an option as it states that C2 error reporting nor FUA cache clear would be avialable.

Option 1 is also a non-option for use with Plextor drives, because it is now known (and can even be tested with dBpowerAMP) that SCSI Pass through interferes with/disables FUA from working at all.  If you have SPT enabled (and installed of course) and you do the FUA test, it will show that the drive does not support it (the separate cache test also reports the PX-716SA/UF as having a cache of 1173KB).  When you uninstall SPT via the run command "sptdinst_x86.exe remove" followed by a reboot--both drives show that the support FUA, and subsequently, once enabled, doing the cache test will reveal that the cache is 0KB (this coming after a popup box I believe that stated that no audio cd was detected however. --strange)

Thinking a litte bit I though to myself "Isn't an ASPI layer supposed to be at play here somewhere?"  As it is with EAC (Exact Audio Copy) for example.  Well here's where things get very weird.  1st of all, using my internal PX-716SA on CD "Dry Kill Logic -The Dead And Dreaming" wiht dBpowerAMP (FUA DISABLED, using SPT --you will see why in a minute why I chose those options).  The disc extracts correctly (and quickly I might add-impressive as far as speed is concerned) without errors (log included at bottom).

Switching to using my external USB 2.0 Plextor PX-716UF with the same settings results in massive errors (log included below).  My External drive is working fine, is almost brand new, and also works perfectly with plextools or EAC.  It is plugged directly into a USB 2.0 port in the back of my PC.

In contemplating what to do to resolve this issue, I downloaded the NERO ASPI layer, the same one which is used and recommened for EAC by "The Uber Standard".  I placed this file wnaspi32.dll v 2.0.1.74 Win32 nero ASPI library, within C:\Program Files\Illustrate\dBpowerAMP.

I figured this might have a shot at the weird errors, thinking that the SCSI pass through would not work through a USB 2.0 interface.  Once this was done I re-opened dBpowerAMP and what happened is ALL of the drive letters for my 4 CD/DVD-RW drives showed up with THE SAME DRIVE LETTER, that being "F".  No drive would recognize an audio CD, it would just constantly refresh the pop-up box if I tried to click "Retry".  Nothing is wrong with the allocation of my drive letters as confirmed by Logical Disk Manager in Administrative Tools, Computer Management.  I figured that it must be something that exists simply because it is still alpha software, and is a bug that will be worked out. 

ONly problem with that however is the fact that someone here had previously posted that they had successfully extracted an audio CD using the external PX-716UF.  Here are the logs so you can see what has happened, perhaps there's something that I am overlooking or not doing correctly, but like I said, it does work fine with my Internal drive using the exact same settings except that I had detected the cache for the external drive (with SPT, and hence, no capability of using FUA for now -nothing works using the Nero ASPI layer).

11 Tracks Could Not Be Ripped

Perhaps the ASPI layer has to go into a Windows directory instead of the main program (to be able to use FUA and not lose C2 capability as the Windows Internal setting says it will do if enabled)?  Or perhaps the specific ASPI layer isnt compatible with thie program?  I look forward to your analysis of these issues.  Thank you

To clarify this a bit  --dBpowerAMP did not automatically change the drive letters to all "F"'s until I manually selected "ASPI" from the drop-down list  next to Read into lead in lead out; Communication.  Once that was selected and the program closed and re-opened it did this, and the problem was repeatable.  When swithcing back to SCSI pass through (SPT), then closing and re-opening the program it then correctly recognized my four drives and would actually recognize an audio CD then.

To illustrate exactly what I was seeing with the Nero aspi layer selected, in the drop down box, was the following:

Insert Audio CD Into:

It suggests that ABF87DF7 is correct as that is the only one verified by accuratte rip, and hte confidence is very reasonable.

i Secure:  the i stands for an informational warning, that a re-rip was required so the track might not be 100% secure (as relies on the drives re-read ability).

There does seem to be an issue regarding drive letter detection and the Nero ASPI layer, perhaps even the normal aspi layer as well. I will look into that.

That option read into lead in/out is on its own, it is a checkbox, SCSI & Windows internal fall under communication. Regardless...

Windows XP has SPT as default, you cannot uninstall it. There exists demon tools which inserts something into the middle of programs accessing SPT and the drive, that is causing the FUA to stop working. SPT is normally the best you can use, much better than ASPI.

Did you try the USB plextor on SPT?

Yeah, I also think TrueAudio is confusing the Win32 SPT Interface (SPTI) with filter drivers that hook into the middle of the SPT/SPTI layers.  Typically you see copy protection related drivers causing this sort of problem, but as you mentioned DT's filter driver appears to interfere as well.

I only get "i" very very rarely and when i do just a clean of the disk or a brasso, turtle wax combo does the trick.  But a lot of the discs i have tried needed re-rips but never had an i.

Is this only for a certain kind of re rip or something?  or re rip with no c2 feedback or something?

Windows XP has SPT as default, you cannot uninstall it. There exists demon tools which inserts something into the middle of programs accessing SPT and the drive, that is causing the FUA to stop working. SPT is normally the best you can use, much better than ASPI.

Did you try the USB plextor on SPT?


Ok, here's an update:

1st, you are correct in that I was confused with regards to the SPTI option (thank you for clarifying that it is independent of the overread options), I wasn't aware this was an integral part of WinXP, but rather thought that it was only something added by Daemon tools, which I in fact, had installed, but had uninstalled, as well as removed the SPTI pass through "filter driver" or whatever that Daemon Tools adds.

Yes, I did try the USB plextor with SPT, in secure mode with the settings that you've recommended on this site (as can be seen in the logs also).  But it nonetheless errors out every time, I even tried changing a setting and added some spin-up time to it, tried it without overread, etc --all to no avail.

The external PX-716UF however will rip in Burst mode, and it even shows to get accurate results against accuraterip database.  Switching back to secure mode though, it refuses to read a single track (see the LBA erros in my above log).  Initially, my PX-716UF had had firmware revision 1.04U flashed to it.  This is what had been on it during all my tests.  Just prior to this post here, I flashed it to the latest 1.10 firmware, and the flash was successful and was in no way interrupted.

I rebooted my PC as standard procedure then proceeded to test it again, only to get the same errors reading every single track in secure mode, with a clean, scratch, and DRM free disc.

BUT OMG Spoon now the plot thickens!!! =)

---->C2 Error Pointers for Error Detection  The PX-716A is is supposed to support C2 yes?  Because guess what, **unchecking** the C2 option, for the 1st time, the external drive ripped the entire CD in secure mode, but it will not do so with C2 enabled, and this is with firmware v1.10, the latest.  Included are the logs from a different, scratch-free, non-copy protected CD.

1st log = PX-716UF using C2        Drive I
2nd log= PX-716UF *without* C2  Drive I
3rd log= PX-716SA *using* C2      Drive G

Possible issue with my drive, or your program have an issue with enabling C2 on an external PX-716UF?  And if so, how could there possibly *just* be a problem with the C2 of the drive to such a severe extent that it totally errors out but yet all other functions work fine?  Thank you for your assistance.

Why don't you try downloading nero cd speed and see if it returns like a bajillion c2 erros on that cd... or whether its working at all...

Well, did another very significant test.

I have alot of drives, as I have kind of hoarded the good ones that aren't made anymore.  I just hooked up another brand new PX-716UF, this one is even newer than my other one.  The original PX-716UF that I did the tests with had TLA# 0203 (which is still supposed to be ok to use, according to Jean Luc, as its the same TLA that he had).  The one that I just hooked up is TLA# 0304.  The CD is 100% fine (remember I've tried 2 different CD's now) IMHO there's no need to try more, it's not going to make any difference, but I will just to reinforce my findings.  Same error messages when having C2 enabled.

So we have the same repeatable problem with TWO different PX-716UF external drives, both brand new, and both with different hardware components, the 1st being TLA#0203, the second, showing the exact same errors, TLA#0304.
