DDL and DTS encoding ala soundcard, whats it like?

AVSforum discussion got kinda spirited talking about DDL and DTS encoding as done by the current generations of soundcards (auzentech for the most part) and I realized I don't have any idea what sort of quality this type of encoding can offer, anybody know? How does it compare to MP3 bitrates for example?
