Ogg Bitrate help

Hi I want to trancode mp3 to ogg

My target bitrate is around 64kbps or 96kbps

which is the best bitrate for low bitrate in ogg

CBR OR VBR OR ABR

which is the best for 64kbps

and are 80 and 96 much better than 64

Ogg Vorbis performs best using the quality settings (VBR).

For average 64 kbps, use quality 0 (-q 0).
For avg 80 kbps, quality = 1,
For avg 96 kbps, quality = 2,

They are approximations of course and depends on the complexity of your music.

btw.  Transcoding is a bad idea so do it only if it is absolutely necessary.

yeah I just wanna send music to my brother, he on 56k connection

so I use winLAME and put it to worst quality

I think the songs sound still good

By the way, I listen to metal

so the song really heavy

thx

if you're listening to metal at that bit rate, you might actually want to encode in mono  to reduce some of the artifacts, which must be just awful at that bit rate.

It will sound REALLY bad if you transcode MP3 ---> Ogg Vorbis, just to note, so don't expect something to sound so great.

I recommend -q 1. For your target bitrate of 64k-96k, 80k VBR should work.

Vorbis encoder accepts quality setting -1<=q<=10
q=-1 is nominal bitrate 45 kbps. Don't expect high quality there.

I dont know men

I trancoded a mp3 song to ogg at worst quality ( using winlame), the bitrate is ~75k

and the song still sound good ( i meant it much better than WMA9pro Q25 or mp3pro 64)

Ogg is awesome, BTW

any1 knows some chip that can decode ogg

I need that for my project ( mp3 wma ogg jukebox)

btw check out http://www.mp3projects.com, grear website for mp3 hardware developer

I think ogg is great deal for future portable devices

I was surprised at how appallingly bad Ogg sounds when transcoded from another Ogg or an MP3!
I went on holiday, so I transcoded a whole bunch of albums from q6 Oggs down to q2.5 to fit lots on my flash card.
ARGGHHH!!! I've never heard anything quite so bad!
It wasn't the type of music: q2.5 sounded absolutely great when I ripped directly from CD (and it is fine for transcodes from MPC).

I see posts every now and then here, asking how to detect whether a CD has been burned from MP3s.
I think the ogg encoder could be the basis of a VERY effective detector for these.
