There are other people who were once involved in the audio community who seem to have disappeared from the face of the earth.............

I wouldn't jump to any conclusions though, it could be that he simply got sick of it all and felt that it was unimportant to honor previous commitments.

that seems, most likely.  for if he were to appear now (assuming he isn't already amongst us  ) there would be alot of people looking for support/infos, maybe even a little pissed off

but not me, i purchased encspot knowing i would never have an email answered or an update released.

The guessing code was posted on this board so the most important thing is there to be used.

People change jobs, careers, prioties, relationships, etc.  He may simple have moved on to other projects.

This reminds me of:

What I should have said: "He's probably just late because he needed to finnish some work or is busy in a meeting or got stuck in a traffic jam or his car broke down or he had some urgent shopping to do..."

What I said: "Maybe he was killed."

Which is more than understandable except when people bought a product from him for which they expected support.

That happens all the time with all kinds of software.

Very true, but that doesn't necessarily make it a good thing or even OK.  Also, it's one thing to stop supporting a product and basically discontinue it, but it's another matter entirely to completely disappear without a word and still leave the payment system in place, misleading people into believing that the product is still viable.

He did release some source. It's still around.

Is that still the case? The website and such seem to be down.

The main website is down I think, yes.  Someone linked to the payment system on one of the threads here recently though (I forget the link and the thread) which said nothing about the product no longer being developed or supported or anything like that.

The payment is handled by the same company that handles Deep Sjeng. I'm reading through their pages to see what the policy on 'dead' software is.

If you do a google search on "Jonathan Dee" (potsticker's real name) you find a novelist, a mathematician working on group theory at Caltech, an astrologer, and a sound engineer, as well as assorted people who show up on genealogical pages -- but nobody claiming to write audio software.

Dee used to be listed on the LAME developer's page at sourceforge, but a lot of those people are on this forum, and none of them seems to have any information about his location or present life.  (Evidently they didn't all get together regularly for barbecues or pyjama parties.) So his whereabouts are a mystery, unless he chooses to surface in audio software again.
