Problem with Ubuntu not starting GUI

Hello!

I recently installed Ubuntu 5.10 and after adding and removing some packages (added Konqueror and Gambas, updated the Kernel, removed the BT client...), the system will no longer start the X Window System automatically. After the Ubuntu splash screen that displays which services are started disappears, the screen goes black and then I can log-in in text mode. If I do so and then launch "startx", everything works fine. Gnome loads fine, I can open the text editor, OpenOffice, Konqueror etc.

Any idea what might be wrong and how to fix it?

Regards,
Sebastian

Hi,  happened to me once with Suse 9.3.

Try to disable automatic login.  It should ask you on restart.

It had solved my problem.

Do you feel confortable using Konqueror in Ubuntu? I must say I've used Gnome extensivelly in the past (I've now settled with KDE-3.5), and I've always felt unnatural using small Qt apps in gnome, let alone a complete Filemaneger/browser such as Konqueror.
I find it way more powerful than Nautilus, but I tend to avoid GTK apps in a QT environment, and vice-versa.
Have you considered Kubuntu?

Just curious, not trying to convince you of anything
