Metadata (Properties) saving and displaying

I've been using Foobar happily for some years now and haven't had any particular questions or problems beyond the initial setup.  Have lately been encouraging a friend with a huge music library to get set up with Foobar, in anticipation of (I gather) withdrawal of support for the Windows media player he's been using.  A basic question, prompted by helping him: Why won't Foobar save metadata in some fields (e.g., "Composer," under Properties)?  It will save Comments, and I can change form of artist's names, etc., but within Foobar I cannot seem to add data for certain fields ("Composer," "Performer").  It's a surprise, just because I haven't tried before, with theses fields.

Related, if anyone knows: Are the "Composer" fields in Exact Audio Copy and Foobar mismatched or not linked?

My friend old rips (from Windows Media Player) show Properties>Composer but he can find no way to display or add "Composer" in new rips from Exact Audio Copy.

Any help appreciated.   N.

Hi there,

The fields you mentioned tag fine for me with FLAC, MP3, AAC files. Though I usually rip in EAC and completely re-tag in foobar, since I think it more trustworthy to tag correctly.

What version of foobar and what file types are you/your friend tagging?

Could try (hold shift key) right-click files > Tagging > Rewrite file tags.

What happens exactly when you go into Properties and type in the 'Composer' field?

Cheers

Hi back, and thanks for your reply.  I've been tagging .wav/.cue files. (my friend the same)  Tags have come in fine from EAC for me, and within Foobar I've been able to change form of artist name, or genre, or year, with no problem.  But just noticed lately that I cannot (within Foobar) add data to "Composer" or "Performer" fields.  When I go into Properties and type in the 'Composer' field, it simply will not save.

I am using Foobar 1.5 beta 6, in Windows 7 32-bit.

Regarding: "Could try (hold shift key) right-click files > Tagging > Rewrite file tags"
I'm not sure what's supposed to happen.  After selecting "Rewrite file tags," a window or dialog box appears for just a fraction of a second, and then disappears.

Any help appreciated.--N.

Cue sheets have quite limited metadata support.

Oh, I see.  Perhaps it's a simple as that, then.  Thanks.  I'll look for some guidance of .cue metadata capabilities.

You can use "songwriter" field with cue sheets for the author of music and lyrics. Still, few other programs will recognize it, and you can't write multiple values to this field. Better convert the rips to a track-based format and use native tags.

Thanks much.  Very clarifying.
