SACD / DVDA

Hi,

Is there a realistic future for these formats (or anything similar)?

I would love the option of a 'better than CD' experience, but from what I can gather there is currently little support for this from the music industry.

Is it worth investing time* looking into these formats or am I headed for frustration?

They are at most niche products.  In the future all the heat in 'high rez' sound will be from the high-def DVD formats (Dolby TrueHD, and DTS HD Master Audio). SACD seems increasinly confined to boutique label classical releases.  DVD-A pops its head up once in awhile (Beatles LOVE being the most notable recent occurence) but is otherwise dormant, even as Dual Disc.

Aside from which, it's likely that whatever 'better' you get from them, is due to better mastering or hardware, rather than the formats , whose intrinsic audibility versus CD has yet to be firmly established by scientific tests.

Certainly if you want to hear multichannel mixes, and different masterings, they are one way to go.

I got SACD, HDCD and DVD-A players but still don't get the "better than CD experience!"
