Adobe Audition 2.0 released

I so f****g hate what Adobe did to Audition.
From the second I heard Adobe bought the beautiful, beautiful CoolEdit I knew is was gonna be a matter of time before they "adobefied" that cool piece of software.
I dl the tryout. Installed it and my biggest fear became true. They upgrade the product just to add a stupid an intrascendental adobe-like makeover wich now takes up to 20% of my screen more than 1.5 did (I don´t care if it processes somthing in 20 seconds instead of 30, when I can´t have confortably at hand all the tools I had in 1.5, and I don´t give a crap about the ASIO support when I have to pay for it, I already have Vegas 6 wich is cheaper and getting better in every release).
Cool, cool Audition 1.5
Sucky, sucky Audition 2.0
And WTF is a lasso tool doing in Audition????!!!!!!!
I guess I´ll have to stick to 1.5 and start looking for other tools that will have decent upgrades in the future cause Audition has just made my black list. Wich sucks cause I really loved it.
And now I have to wait to see them adobefy Dreamweaver and Flash. It´s gonna be a sad, sad day indeed. Why do I have that death-row/armaggedon_is_coming-like feeling?

you're right Wonderchan.
Adobe have made a FEW improvements with 2.0 but a lot of bad things.
Wonderchan: "wich now takes up to 20% of my screen more than 1.5 did" - TRUE!!!
One thing that i like is the "amplify" option: now we have  realtime balans on amplfy. i don't use that option anyway
So, in conclusion...

Sorry to hear you guys don't like it. Each to their own, I guess.
Personally, I will admit I had my reservations about the look of it when I first saw it, but I've really grown on it.
And yeah, I'll agree with the screen real estate issue... it does take up more. But then, they have upped the monitor resolution in the "recommended minimum" spec.
I'm not going to say I love everything about it... it's not perfect. If it WAS perfect, there'd never be another upgrade!
As for the lasso tool... how can you not love that?  Switch to spectral view, then use the lasso tool to select frequency vs time. I think that's actually one of the really good new features.
Anyway... as I said before, each to their own.
Cheers,
Bruce.

It seems that the complaints about it are aesthetic, not functional.

I'm loving it - very powerful, flexible software.

I just wanted to say that I have used Adobe Audition 1.5 for a year and a half and can hardly believe that I have finally found some other users that like it as much as I do. Most posting that I have seen in the past about Audition seem to have been from users that were in need of some "general computer" training as opposed to any valid issues with the program itself.
I love the program and have never had a problem with any aspect of it. I can hardly wait to get my hands on the new 2.0 version. From all that I have read, Adobe has addressed issues that even I would have never thought of.
It's a real treat to have found a forum on this subject where the discussions are honest, educated, and intelligent.
Thanks to all.

When aesthetics affect the way u use it, it becomes a functional issue.
I know my post came out very hard, but it´s not against the actual Audition core, but against the release of stupid improvements.
I adore CoolEdit/Audition, it´s my top-of-the-shelf software for every audio need I have, don´t care if other programs can do the same in 2/3 the time. It is to me the best audio software ever created. Wich is way I´m so reluctant and touchy to accept changes that doesn´t actually improve its performance.
ASIO support: absolutely necessary and totally welcome feature, good for them and good for us. Excellent.
Charging the screen with unnecessary aesthetic design: not cool. Or are they gonna sell it with a bundle: a free 19-inch monitor wich the purchase of your Audition copy. I don´t think so.
So now I can make simoultaneous 8-ch recordings... but I can only see two of those channels in the Track window at a time. You win something, you loose something else.

This may not be the right place to ask but: does anyone know a way to make Audition use Soundfont 2 samples?

Toology, can't comment on Soundfont2 files... what is the file extention for those?

Francesco, no, you can't switch to the old interface. Think about it... how would you make a program with features x y and z display using a GUI designed for a version of the app which only had feature x, but not y and z?

Killthecat, if you're interested in learning more about Audition, I do a podcast called Building The Pod, which is a week by week tutorial on how to use Audition. Episodes 1-28 are based on v1.5. Everything since then is based on v2.0... if you're interested.

What exactly about Audition 2 makes it no longer compatible with Win2k?

Well There are a lot of things I am happy with and a few things that I am not happy with in the 2.0 release.  First thing I am happy with is that they are making the product so that it can compete with the other products out there on the market but I dont think that generally they are thinking about the old time users like myself.  I've been using it since Cool Edit Pro 1.5, I loved Syntrillium and I almost cried when I saw that terrible message on the website.  So in my opinion they are failing on keeping it real to the users that made their lives Cool Edit Pro, but I do understand that they are trying to take over a new market.  I love the new Multiband Compressor, the Mastering Rack, Automation Tools for digital mixers and ASIO Support!!!  I think the next release will be better since they will find out what they did wrong.

[span style='font-size:9pt;line-height:100%']By the way, I am buying the Yamaha 01x mixer, does anyone know if the new version of Adobe Audition 2 has full compatabilaty with the mixer???  The mixer does come with Mackie Control drivers....[/span]

Thanks

I'm guessing it's something to do with the way they re-wrote the code. I know for a fact that if you try and run the installer under Win2K, it gives you an error telling you that "this operating system in not supported".... I tried it myself.

I did better than that. I edited the installer and installed. It is more than just the installer though, it really doesn't run under win2k. I'm just wondering exactly what it is that makes it not compatible with win2k? What feature was so important?

Haven't tried running it under X64 yet. That is it for MS OS's on this machine.

I'm still using CEP 2.0, but I tried Adobe Audition 1.5 and I was amazed. I'm waiting for the trial of 2.0 hoping it will be worth the upgrade.

Toology, I have to head off to work this morning, but when I get home tonight, I'll check to see if AA2.0 will open sf2 files.
If you have a small one you could e-mail to me, I'd be happy to try it out for you.

Actually, Toology, if you want to check out this page, it outlines supported file types in AA2.0, and I don't see sf2 in there.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I have been told by another user that yes, he has run the 01x with AA2.0. He did admit to having a few teething problems, but he thinks that that was more to do with Audition by itself than with the communication between the 2 products.
And that's not to say that Audition is not stable... it just needs a little bit of tweaking here and there. For instance, I had to manually set the buffers for my soundcard to get the most reliable audio playback (with 20+ tracks of audio playing, that is!).

audio2u, Thank you...I have read about your tutorials and think that is is great that you offer them. I have been recording with Audition 1.5 for a couple of years now and have become very comfortable with it. With exception of a few vst compression programs, I use nothing else but Audition. Seems like there is ALWAYS something for me to learn each time I use it so I'll be interested in the tutorials coming from a "hands-on" point of view.

Well, I can tell you NOT to upgrade to Nero 7.0. However, Nero doesn't support the 32 bit Windows PCM wav files that the new Audition generates.

I specifically sent the following e-mail to Nero, for which I got a brush off response that said "they are working on the fix"

Despite the literature the wav editor DOES NOT provide full support for 32 bit windows wav files. In particular it does not support - Windows 32 bit-stereo PCM IEEE Float (0.24 float type 3). Rather it appears that the 32 bit support is limited to IEEE 32-bit Int PCM (type 1) which isn't an option on Audition 2.0 (for all I could tell). This is important if you are normalizing the peak values of the wav since that requires floating point data. Regardless this kind of breaks the marriage between these two products.

Worse, the Nero express product shockingly not only puts noticeable clicks between songs that should have 0 seconds of pause between tracks, it actually incorrectly reads\splices the first few bytes of the track that is trying to append the previous track. This never happened in the 6.x product.

That is not all that is wrong with Nero but you will find that the two upgrades don't play well together.

Kudos on the ASIO (which is a little buggy but much appreciated, sometimes I have to close Audition to get it to recoignize newly inserted ASIO channels). Otherwise the product works as advertised.
