can i create my own metadata for wavs in foobar?

i have no need for tags such as 'album title', 'composer' or 'album artist', however i would need to add a few additional tags. is it possible to do this with foobar?

if not can someone recommend another program for doing this?

thank you

You can name your metadata fields any way you like. Why don't you just try it out?
It's only audiophile if it's inconvenient.

i am not talking about fields, i am talking about the names for those fields.

apparently it is not possible on wavs so how about mp3s? or am i misinformed?

...and so is Kohlrabi. "You can name your metadata fields any way you like" is fairly unambiguous - he wasn't talking about the contents of the fields....

Again, for formats where there is a proper tagging standard (e.g. mp3, FLAC, AAC, etc.) you can name fields whatever you like - but note that some players (like the ones that ship with Ubuntu and other linux distros) don't recognise custom field names out-of-the-box, if at all. Once you've named the field you can then populate it with whatever data you like.

foobar
(preferences > advanced > display > properties dialog > standard fields)

That will work, though it is mainly use to select which fields show in the abbreviated view of data shown in the selection properties element.

You can also add as many fields as you like in Properties>Tools>Add new field.

it's not what what i'm looking for as it only edits display information if i'm correct.

i want to edit standard fields in metadata.

can someone recommend a good program for this?

true, but i wanted to make it as simple as possible...apparently, it was not simple enough though...

it only changes the metadata in 'properties', it doesn't change anything in the playview.

all i need is to make my own categories for this long list of soundfiles i have that i can see easily as a list, how can it really be this difficult?

no, it is not difficult. Think a bit about what you are doing.

You add a field named %new field% in whatever method you choose. Add data and that field has data. Simple as that. It is a universal change. It is there and available anywhere in the program.

Now you say it is not in the playlist view. You are right. You have not told foobar to show the information so it does not. Right click on a column and you can see what titleformating code is present. Add another column and add your %new field% as the code pattern and all will be well.

of course not, you need also to tell you playview - whatever you mean by that - to show those tags
how you do that depends on the component you use
if you use for example the default interface's standard playlist viewer, just go to prefences > default interface > playlist view
there you can add new columns, which are then ready to use in the playlist viewer

So the real question is "can i add new columns to a playlist view?" OMG.

i added a field like you suggested but when i right click a file on foobar and click properties the new field doesn't show in metadata, so it's actually useless cuz i can't actually do anything with it. it only shows in the foobar playview but i can't edit it.

You then have to add the same field to the file as well (right click - properties), and assign it a value.

i guess you have a few problems grasping the differences between metadata, metadata fields, un/filled metadata fields and the editing as well as viewing of said fields
so why don't you attach some pics of what you are doing and of what is not working out the way you think it should?

i still don't know what you are doing/trying to accomplish and i guess nobody on this board does
thus nobody can help...

Creating your own custom metadata fields is easy in Foobar. It's explained in Post #7. Below is a screenshot.

You simply create your own field (it will be encased in "<" and ">") and you enter whatever data you want into that field.

If you do not enter any information into the new field, then it will dissappear when you click OK or Apply.

Once you have created your new custom metadata field(s), getting them to show up in the playlist view may be a bit more complicated. Or VERY complicated, depending on your level of expierence using Foobar. But the area to create custom colums is in File > Preferences.

I don't know if this will be of any help.

yeah, well like i said the field doesn't not exist in properties, see:

i still haven't learned windows 7 properly and i don't know how to get screenshots.

why why WHY did you think you needed to quote this entire gigantic post when it is directly above

yeah, i still dont' know how to do this VERY simple thing from all the posts everyone's posted.

i need:

new metadatas (i.e. 'album title', 'composer', 'track title' etc.) ----> be able to edit their metadata fields ----> be able to see them in the playlist view and arrange my files according to them

It was explained thoroughly to you in your own other thread:
jannek, it's a bit of a mystery what you're actually doing and what exactly you're seeing. If you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can use the Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Snipping Tool to make some screenshots. […] The PNG files you create with the Snipping Tool need to be uploaded somewhere where we can see them. I suggest using http://zhost.tk/ because it is simple and will give you a direct link with the right "BB" code you can copy-paste into a message here in the forum.

I don’t know how much more meticulously people can try to explain this for you if you are not willing to read and try things.

let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of foobar/singing

1. preferences > advanced > display > properties dialog > standard fields > make a new filed by adding Field=FIELD
2. preferences > display > default user interface > playlist view > custom columns > add new > set <name> to Field and <pattern> to %field%
3. go to your playlist viewer > right click on the header > columns > Field
4. ???
5. Profit

there's no such thing as:
1. preferences > advanced > display > properties dialog > standard fields >

'standard fields' doesn't exist. 'there's only standard sort patterns' and then you have to insert some code i don't understand.

2. i have been trying to tell this is what i have already done but it only shows the TITLE for the field i.e. 'Raaga' and 'Tala' HOWEVER it does NOT let me to actually edit the information in the field as it doesn't exist in right click file name in playlist view > properties

it's useless to only see the title for the field yet it contains no data itself.

I don't really understand what use making a billion screenshots is going to make since i have already explained many times what the problem is. i don't really understand how you have no clue what i'm trying to do.

It's useless to explain, how to achieve this, over and over again, if you are not willing to read, what was already explained to you.
