XLD: some semi newbie questions, please!

Guys, i red a lot about ripping and decoding music files and today i'm trying to create the perfect copy of my cd but i have some questions for you :
(i use XLD latest version on a Macbookpro)

1) are these the corrects settings to rip in flac with xld? I don't understand if "allow to embed cue sheet" must be checked or unchecked. Please help!!

I put the cd on my mac, open XLD that immediatly scan for the gap and then find itself the metadata. Watching this screen, i must understand that this cd haven't pregap right? It's normal?? Just after that, reading some tutorial, i assume i must save the cue file and that's fine but...i must check for a unique file or multiple tracks? About the pregap it's correct to check "include pre gap for all the tracks"?? When i must set "all except the HTOA. And just if i want to rip the disc in one file i must set about the pregap the last choice or always the first choice?

XLD: some semi newbie questions, please!

I'll take a shot at a few of these:

1) are these the corrects settings to rip in flac with xld? I don't understand if "allow to embed cue sheet" must be checked or unchecked.

"Allow to embed cue sheet" means exactly what it says: if you rip to image+CUE, it will embed the CUE sheet in the FLAC file.  If you're going to go the image+CUE route for your rips, that just means you won't have to keep track of separate CUE sheets, which would seem to be a very convenient thing for converting the image to individual files later on with XLD.  Even if you play the FLAC in a media player that doesn't look for embedded CUE sheets, it shouldn't be a problem.

As far as the "OggS" file type, I have no idea what that means, but I've always left it checked, and I've never had any problems playing back XLD-encoded FLACs in any software I've ever used, Mac or PC.
Quote
2) about the metatag options, are these settings ok?

Well, it depends on how complete/picky you want to get.

Those settings will simply use the first match XLD finds in the freedb or MusicBrainz database, and won't embed album art.

If you want album art automatically embedded, you'll need to check the appropriate box (the third one, Italian for "Embed cover art images into files"  ), and then tweak the settings for how you want that done.

The other one of interest for CD ripping is the second one, "Edit tags before convert."  Check that if you want to review the tag data before XLD starts ripping.
Quote
3) and about the rip settings? Checking the replaygain scan, i make a bad or a good thing?

That just means XLD will embed ReplayGain values in the tag, which, with FLAC files, certainly won't hurt anything - the scanning might slow down ripping slightly.  It doesn't affect the quality of the rip itself at all.  Of course, you have to use playback software that can read ReplayGain tags and apply the gain adjustment for it to mean anything - what do you plan to play the FLACs with?

As far as your ripping settings, I would strongly recommend using the "XLD Secure Ripper" instead of CD Paranoia - it's proving itself to be an excellent ripping engine.

The other option would be to just use Burst mode, and check "Test before copy" - which you've done - but select the second option, "Only when the track does not exist in AccurateRip DB".  For most CDs, that will be your fastest, and yet most secure option.  The only time you should really need to use the secure ripping engine is when the CD/track doesn't have an AccurateRip match, and you don't trust the outcome of the test and copy.  Of course, if there's no speed difference between Burst and the secure engine (as there isn't with the Matshita drive in my Mac mini), then use the secure engine and get the best of both worlds.

Also, I don't really know what "Verify suspicious sectors" means, but if you use AccurateRip, it really isn't going to gain you anything, so you might as well uncheck it.
"Not sure what the question is, but the answer is probably no."

really? But wich option allow to create a single file? But, if i don't want to create a single file, i must uncheck this option right?

so xld allow to embed also the cover art on the flac files?? Nice!! i discover that Freedb works perfectly for me

what i want to do is create a 1:1 flac copy of my albums then convert these in mp3 format to listen with itunes or my iphone so i can check the replaygain feature right? I don't want my audio will be normalize, replaygain doesn't do this right or if it does, just when ask right?

oh, about XLD Secure ripper i must read something, i always think that CD PAranoia was the best choice. And about Burst mode OMG ehehe, on every tutorial i red secure mode was the best choice aaargh

Just to know...sometimes i read XLD log on some forum and they don't contain the bold line -->

so i think it's a problem i mean, without gap maybe it won't be a perfect copy no?!

really? But wich option allow to create a single file? But, if i don't want to create a single file, i must uncheck this option right?

No, you choose to rip to an image+CUE in the drop-down box in the upper left corner of the window that pops up when you insert a CD - it's the last option, "Save to a single file (+cue)".

If you choose to rip to individual tracks, the "Allow to embed cue sheet" option doesn't matter.

what i want to do is create a 1:1 flac copy of my albums then convert these in mp3 format to listen with itunes or my iphone so i can check the replaygain feature right? I don't want my audio will be normalize, replaygain doesn't do this right or if it does, just when ask right?

Correct, ReplayGain has to be enabled in the playback software/device - it doesn't affect the actual audio data in the FLAC (or MP3 or AAC) at all.

Of course, iTunes and iOS devices have no idea what ReplayGain is, so it doesn't matter at all in those instances.

Apple does have a similar system/concept called Soundcheck, and there is some way to convert ReplayGain values to Soundcheck values, but I've never looked into it myself as I never use Soundcheck, and only very rarely use ReplayGain.

And about Burst mode OMG ehehe, on every tutorial i red secure mode was the best choice aaargh

Burst mode on its own is inherently insecure - the addition of AccurateRip verification is what makes it secure (at least as far as verification is concerned - it obviously can't correct errors if there are any).

Just to know...sometimes i read XLD log on some forum and they don't contain the bold line -->

Quote
Ripper mode : CDParanoia III 10.2
Disable audio cache : OK for the drive with a cache less than 2750KiB
Make use of C2 pointers : NO
Read offset correction : 102
Max retry count : 100
Gap status : Analyzed, Appended

so i think it's a problem i mean, without gap maybe it won't be a perfect copy no?!

Gap analysis really only matters if you're ripping to an image+CUE, and with single tracks, appending gaps to the end of the preceding track is the standard way to do it (which you have selected in the screenshot you posted of the ripping window).
"Not sure what the question is, but the answer is probably no."

if i understand your post, it's ok like this?

Those settings will work fine, but you could probably speed things up by unchecking "Verify suspicious sectors" and checking "Don't detect pre-gap, ISRC and MCN".

right, damn i'm so stupid to not see this option, sorry! So if i want to try to rip to an image + cue i MUST remember to check the allow embed option...but if i always have this option checked, XLD will understand when to embed and when not in your opinion?? (sorry for all this stupid questions!!)

perfect, so clear now but damn, i use itunes so just wasting time using to understand replaygain but who knows, maybe somedays i will use another player and the tag on my mp3s will be useful!

ummmm, not like so much Burst mode...

so it's only important if i rip an image and if i correctòy understand, if i split the album onto single tracks it doesn't matter? So that XLD also if i don't select to append pregap he will do this for me in auto?

mix your are the man!!!! (and of course all this amazing forum)

unchecking these settings??? OMG so i really don't understand... Don't detect pre-gap and all these info??? I was thinking that all these info are very important for a good rip and for the cue file...And why not verifiy suspicious sectors???? If i have a cd that work not so well, if i unchecked this setting the rip will be not so good right??
