MP3s failing to open in Audition

I am using Adobe Audition 2.0 and have run into trouble attempting to import mp3s to edit them or add them into a multi-track session.

80% of the time they import fine and can be edited but occasionally, Audition doesn't know how to interpret the files and what sample rate and resolution it should be interpreted as. When I select the correct settings it then opens the file as PCM raw data "(no header)" then offers variations of 32 and 24-bit IEEE formats and asks how by how much it should offset input data.

The result is garbage, similar to if you try to open a notepad file using Audition.

I haven't experienced any problems importing .WAV or .FLAC files.

I suspect this is due to a type of copy protection in the mp3s but that is just a guess. Any advice would be highly appreciated.

If you think it would help, I can upload a couple of files that create this problem.

I searched the forums for similar queries but found none, so thought I should start a new topic.

Do the failures consistently happen on the same mp3 files? If so, the headers or file itself may be corrupted or otherwise incorrect. This is not always obvious when a file is played normally.

Is there any pattern to the files that have this problem. e.g. illegal downloads?

How would it tell an illegal MP3 from a legal one with the same name and meta-data?

If the illegal one was created by some unknown person that keeps screwing up the process, leaving his "product" incompatible with Audition?

I've heard of this happening with "older" MP3s.  I assume you can play the file?

Try using a different program to convert it to WAV.  (Audacity, XRECODE, foobar2000, etc.)

I've never heard of an MP3 with copy protection...    If you can play the file with Windows Media Player, it means the Windows decoder is working with this file.    (It's possible that Audition is using it's own MP3 decoder.)

Right!  That won't work...  You are not loading PCM data...  You're loading the raw (compressed) MP3 data into Audition.  It's not useful in that format...  And yes, it does "look like" (and sound like) garbage.    The "numbers" don't represent PCM audio.  I don't know of any audio editor that can decompress the data after it's loaded.

CoolEdit, the predecessor of Audition, has had problems opening mp3s a few times, VBR mp3s I had just encoded with LAME. There was nothing wrong with the mp3 files, they decoded just fine with other programs. CoolEdit read the wav result of that decoding correctly. It may not happen very often, but now I never bother. There are other easy options available.

The fact certain MP3 files won't load sounds very unusual. Makes me wonder what is up?
Try using a different program to convert it to WAV.
This works, but also one could try LAME filter for Cool Edit/Audition. Little bit of work needed to set up, and your setup might vary slightly due to my instructions being from Audition 1.5, but here goes:

1) download stable LAME bundle at http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-bundle.php
2) download LAME Cool Edit/Audition filter at http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-libraries.php
3) extract lame_enc.dll to Audition folder
4) extract cool_lame.flt to Audition folder
5) find file in Audition folder "fhtpro.flt" and rename to "fhtpro.flt.off" This is the MP3 filter included with Audition, renaming it disables the filter without needing to delete. Or move it to the parent directory if you can't edit your extention. Note: by doing this you will be disabling MP3Pro encoding, whatever that is

Good luck!
