EAC Various Artists instead of Various

I'm ripping my CDs to my computer, and I've chosen FLAC. It's simple enough to then convert them afterward, and it should mean I never have to put the discs in again.

I'm have a problem with compilation CDs:

I can't figure out how to control what EAC calls a compilation CD's artist. Sometimes EAC puts "Various Artists" and other times "Various" when I check the "Various Artists" box.

I can put in two different compilations and one will tag the CD artist as "Various" and the other tags it as "Various Artists" -- I don't want to go back to re-tag the files and rename the folders.

I know it's an EAC thing (not a FLAC thing) because it shows this in the program's title bar, and then also becomes the folder name.

I want everything to be "Various Artists" -- not "Various"

EAC puts in what it gets from freedb or whatever you have it configured to use.  If you check the box then it changes CD Artist to Various, that's correct, however, if the CD Artist was Various Artists it may display as Various, but EAC will still use Various Artists for %D.

Unfortunately this is not the right forum if you want this behavior changed.

EDIT:
I'm currently in the process of investigating this further, including the behavior of the %V parameter.  I'll update this post when I finish or create a new post if someone replies before I finish.

...

It says "Various" in the CD artist either way, but when it says "Various" in the title bar of the application, the folder and logs say "Various." When it says "Various Artists" in the title bar, the folders and logs say "Various."

I can't find any place to set/change this. It just randomly appears from freedb.

I do know that if I uncheck the "Various Artists" checkbox in the main window, and then type in "Various Artists" into the CD artist this works as an automatic re-checking of the "Various Artists" checkbox. It has no effect on whether "Various Artists" or "Various" shows up in the application window or the folders or logs.

I'm not looking for any feature of EAC to change -- I just want to know where to tell it to use "Various Artists" instead of "Various" when tagging, writing folder names, and creating logs. How do I tell it to use different info than freedb gave it. In all the other fields (album, genre, date, etc.) I just click on it to edit it.

I just took a CD and entered "V" in the CD Artist field and left the Various Artists box unchecked.

EAC ripped the track and used "V" for both %V and %D and treated the rip as a various artists rip.

After the rip was done, the Various Artists box was checked and the CD Artist field changed to "Various" and was grayed-out.  EAC's title bar still showed the CD Artist as "V".

Ripping again gave the exact same result.  Unchecking the box and ripping again gave the exact same result.

Changing the CD Artist to "Va", "Vari". "Vario", "Variou", "Various" and "Various" followed by any combination of characters resulted in the same behavior.  It is only when any of the first seven characters deviate from the word "Various" or the way one would begin to spell the word without completing the word that EAC would treat the setting as one would expect.  Even though I've specified "Various" it's actually not case-sensitive.

Regardless, what is entered prior to checking the box or the box being automatically checked gets used in EAC's %V and %D parameters.

If it makes any difference, I have EAC set to use English.

Uncheck the Various Artists box and enter Various Artists in the CD Artist field.

Thanks greynol!

It looks like it works if I:
  • detect gaps
  • uncheck the box, then type in "Various Artists" (don't hit enter afterward)
  • create the cue
  • uncheck the box, then type in "Various Artists" (don't hit enter afterward)
  • test and rip

I would have never thought to press enter afterwards.  Maybe this is why I didn't experience the same thing as you.

You don't need to re-enter Various Artists after creating the CUE.  You don't need to re-enter it after ejecting and re-inserting the disc or even after closing  and re-opening EAC.

Mefodiy, I had the same problem you did on such CDs, with some being named with "Various", others with "Various Artists".

I finally eliminated the %D and manually put in just "VA" where %D usually goes.  Now, regardless of the freedb data, my compilation CDs will all begin with "VA_-_" in my settings in EAC.

Go to EAC -> EAC Options -> Filename tag window.

See how I have mine set up?

For standard audio CDs, my filenaming scheme I've set up above will be as follows:

Metallica_-_Load_01_Ain't_My_Bitch.mp3
Metallica_-_Load_02_Unforgiven_II.mp3

etc.

For compilation audio CDs that have multiple artists (Various Artists), the filenames will be such:

VA_-_TranceMaster2009_01_DJ_QuikStep_-_Another_Day_(Toolbait's_Remix).mp3
VA_-_TranceMaster2009_02_Righteous_Rob_-_Fight_The_Power_(Club_Mix).mp3

etc.

For you, you would likely put "Various Artists" replacing %D instead of just "VA" like I did.

As for the ID3 tags, I always do final tag tuning with foobar2k.  The "Artist" tag is track artist of a compilation CD and would thus be different for each track (DJ QuikStep, Righteous Rob, etc. in my example).  The "Album Artist" tag would be set to "Various Artists"
