Best way to convert .ape file to separate .wav's?

As the title suggests, I would like to convert a single large .ape file to separate .wav's. I've tried a couple of different methods, firstly using Cue Splitter. This split it into separate .ape files for each song, but I noticed they are shorter than the ones foobar2000 creates. Why is this? They are 3 seconds longer for the Cue Splitter version. I also downloaded Monkey's Audio and used it to decompress to one large .wav file.

What I want to end up with is the album at it's correct length, separate .wav's, which I will then encode as .flac files. Help appreciated. Damn this is confusing for a noob...

Nothing is wrong with FB2K, I just wondered why one gave me longer files than the other.

EDIT: I used EAC instead. Decompressed original .ape to one large .wav, then split the .wav using the cue sheet from the original .ape and had EAC include gaps.

Gap handling is the most likely explanation.

I would use fb2k.  Just make sure there isn't a 00 index before the first track.  If there is then you'll need either to manipulate the cue sheet to get fb2k to extract it or you'll have to try a different tool (allow me to recommend CUE Tools).  I'm not sure which cue splitter you're using, but it's the only other one I would trust besides fb2k and EAC.  The problem with EAC is that it will only split wave files (AFAIK).

I get the feeling that Medieval CUE Splitter does not add gaps by default.  This is a bad thing.

EDIT: Noting your edit, I think you're on the right path.

Greynol, thank you for the help. I think you are correct -- Medieval doesn't add gaps at all, even with "Include gaps" option checked. I'm not impressed! I will take a look at CUE Tools.

EAC did the job anyway. "Split WAV By CUE Sheet > With Gaps" added the gaps to the end of the tracks, so all seems to be well.

Thanks again.

You're welcome.

If you come across an image with a hidden track and you're using EAC, cut it with gaps and then go back and cut as individual indices.  Cancel after it finishes the hidden track (if you can cancel, I don't remember).  Keep the 01.00 file from the second cut and blow away the rest.

Hello! I was very interested by this discussion but I cannot understand if foobar2000 is sufficient to split a big .ape file into several mp3 files, for instance.

This is what I did:

Open the .ape file (had to download te Monkey add-on first)
Right-click, Utils, Edit cuesheet, then browse for the associated .cue file
Right-click, Convert, select mp3 format (and specify directory for lame.exe), select Convert each track into an individual file.

But the preview shows only one file... and I obtain only one file.

I suppose I have missed something. Can somebody help, please?

Once you've embedded the cue sheet you need to re-add the file to the playlist for the change to get picked up (or perhaps force a tag update), unless this has changed in recent versions.

Edit: also, you don't need to embed the cue sheet.  Just make sure that it is pointing to the ape file (open in Notepad) and drag the cue sheet into the playlist.
I'm on a horse.

Great! Indeed, I just had to remove the file from the playlist and add it again (drag and drop's ok) and it instantly showed in the playlist as a list of files. Then the conversion produced individual files.
I didn't have to do anything else.
Thanks a lot!
