HELP! - Adaptec's ASPI layer problem

I have windows XP and I've downloaded adaptec's ASPI drivers version v4.71.2 .
I've accidently installed the driver for WinME - so it installed the wrong files into my system, then I tried to update the driver 2 the correct installation (winXP) and now it doesn't work right - all the burning softwares say that the ASPI installation is corrupted...

HOW CAN I UN-INSTALL it COMPLETELY so I'll b able 2 re-install it the right way?

Try to locate the wn32aspi.dll or something like that file in the Windows\System32 folder and delete it. Or install Nero Burning Rom and get the file from there and copy it to the System32 dir.

You can also try this little installer.
Extract to dir with adaptec stuff and launch.
BTW there's a built-in uninstaller (handle with care  )

According to this page, it should have installed these files.  It also installs some stuff in the Program Files folder, under Adaptec probably. Try deleting them and reinstalling the right aspi, and hope that does any needed registry changes.  Reboot.  Also, there should be a program called aspichk.exe in the program files \ Adaptec \ ASPI folder, that should tell if the install is good or not.

Windows 98 / ME:

windows\system\iosubsys\apix.vxd
windows\system\apienum.vxd
windows\system\winaspi.dll
windows\system\wnaspi32.dll

Windows NT / 2000 / XP:

windows\system32\drivers\aspi32.sys
windows\system\wowpost.exe
windows\system\winaspi.dll
windows\system\wnaspi32.dll

Ignore all the crap about Force ASPI, that's obsolete.

I had a the same problem but with plextor burning software(it didn't agree with EAC very well) using windows 98se. The aspi layer got corrupted. So, I called the tech support line and this guy had to walk me through these steps to fix the aspi layer. I can't remember exactly what he did, but it was pretty complicated. I had to goto in to regedit and delete some keys, but only in a certin order. And after each key was deleted, I had to reboot each time. Then I had to re-install some other files, of course- one at a time, re-booting after this and that in a particaler order. It really was a mess but it did get fixed with all  that work.  Later on I took my Plextor back because I found out that they s*ck now for cd burners(not including the aspi problem), so all that was for nothing >_<.

Ok, but getting ASPI to work with EAC or any other specific program is a whole different issue.

See this thread when you need to do that.

I've checked Adaptec's guides and release notes 4 the ASPI layer I have (the latest), it says that 4 XP only
ASPIXP.SYS    and    WNASPIXP.DLL  r installed, so I removed the other files that I've accidently installed (wowpost.exe and another one) and also re-installed the ASPI layer (this time correctly), and here's the situation now:
aspichk says everythin is ok, Nero's Infotool says the same.
FEURIO's the only one that's claiming that somethin is wrong: "The ASPI-driver consists of inconsistent versions.
The different files of the ASPI-driver installed on your system have different version numbers.
Most probably an update has been installed incompletely!
PLEASE INSTALL THE ASPI-DRIVER AGAIN!"

who should I believe??? should I ignore feurio?

hmm there should be a tool from adaptec somewhere that tells you what version of ASPI you have and if there is any conflict. i used it on win98 once. damnit i dont remember how its called

try to uninstall feurio, reboot system, reinstall feurio to see if it corrects the problem. i cant promise this will work, but its worth a try
