OGG file in WMP11 - missing track length

Hello all,

I wonder if anyone can offer me some advice on this. I can get OGG files to play fine in wmp11 using the wmptse plug-in, but both track length and bit-rate columns show up as blank. I can live with the latter but I'd really like the track length to show up; as it stands at the moment the progress bar doesn't even move along as  the Ogg track plays.

I've spent a couple of days scouring forums and sites about this, and apart from one question with no answer couldn't find anything similar.

I've used MP3Tag to try and swap tagging information, I've tried adding TLEN, TIME and SONGLEN as tags to the Vorbis Comment info too, but I still keep getting blank track lengths.

If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful.

Cheers

Gedh

I use ffdshow and when I open an ogg-file in WMP11 it plays nicely and shows me the correct length. It won't show the bitrate though.

Hi,

I'm using illiminable, but apparently this won't import or show track length (found out yesterday after a few more hours looking around on-line); removed that, and tried ffdshow as the other post suggests (thanks for that suggestion). Strangely, if I double click an ogg track in windows explorer, windows media player loads up and plays it - the progress bar moves and the track length shows in "properties". If I try to play the file from within media player however, it is still blank track length, properties gives track length as 0:00, and the progress bar doesn't move.

I also found having uninstalled illiminable, that refreshing my music library in wmp11 wouldn't pick up ogg tracks anymore.

There was also a K-lite coded pack in there, which I uninstalled; I've tried the three (illiminable, k-lite and ffdshow) in various orders and pairings and got in a bit of a mess.

Now I feel like I'm just thrashing around in the dark!

Any other directshow filters I should try?

Thanks

Gedh

Yeah, I noticed that not only ffdshow is loading, but Haali Media Splitter is loading too.
Uninstall every other codec and codec pack you have and install this.

Yikes; downloaded and installed the cccp codec pack you linked to above, having removed all other codecs. Ogg files wouldn't even play at all!

Well, that is strange. On my PC I have only the CCCP installed, nothing else, and I can play all kinds of things. What exactly have you uninstalled?

PS: You could also just use another player, like Winamp or foobar2000. They have their own codecs and don't rely on Directshow.

Got CCCP to work at second attempt and reboot, but still track length zero; but it now plays ogg files like illiminable did, at least.
I'm sort of stuck in my ways with wmp11 and a huge library I don't want to muck about with too much - a side-effect of zero track-length is that the tracks won't scrobble on lastfm.

I'll keep bashing away at the problem, and thanks for the tips. CCCP seems like a better pack than k-lite, anyway.

Good to hear that CCCP hasn't wrecked your system
When you play an ogg file what symbols have you in your system tray? There should be ffdshow audio decoder and Haali Media Splitter. That is, when you haven't fiddled with the settings. If you have, just 'Reset all settings' in the Settings dialog.

Yes, they were sitting there in the system tray, and the file played fine; it's just this zero track-length and progress bar not moving issue that's bugging me

Try the bundled Media Player Classic or Zoomplayer. If the file plays correct there with the right track length then it should be a problem with WMP11. You could try reinstalling it, but I don't think it would keep the library (or would it ).

When that doesn't help then, well, maybe bad plugins? I dunno

This sounds like the system was still using the illiminable filters, with ffdshow's mixer just processing the already decoded PCM data. Have a look at the ffdshow audio decoder configuration's "Info & debug" section while playing back a Vorbis file with WMP. If it was displaying 16 bits, 44100 Hz, uncompressed, then illiminable wouldn't have been properly uninstalled.

Reinstalled the cccp codecs; I can select a file and play it in MPClassic, and the time bar moves ok and the duration shows up fine - the thing is, if I select a file from wmp11 "file - open" menu, I get the same result. The problem is when the file plays from within my wmp11 library - then I don't get duration or any progress bar movement.

I've had wmp11 search and add a new ogg file to the library whilst just using the cccp codecs, but again, I have the same problem - once it's in the library, blank length and no progress bar movement when the track plays.

Checked the ffdshow debug info and yes, I have 16bits & 44100Hz when playing back an ogg file (couldn't see anything about 'uncompressed') but, when I use "file - open" to open an ogg file in wmp11 (and the progress bar moves and track length is ok) ffdshow still says 16bits & 44100Hz.

I'm probably missing the obvious, but this is driving me mad

If "uncompressed" isn't mentioned anywhere, then the illiminable codec doesn't decode the .ogg stream prior to ffdshow further processing it, i.e. this isn't the problem. To verify it's actually the ffdshow filter which decodes the signal, you can have a closer look at the debug info. The "Input description" line should display something like 44100 Hz, stereo 100 kbps* vorbis (tremor), "Decoder" should be "tremor" as well. Alternatively you could also try switching to the "libavcodec" for Vorbis handling in the "Codecs" section of ffdshow's audio decoder configuration. It might work better for you, though I wouldn't recommend using it, since in my case it crashes Windows Media Player when trying to play back a Vorbis file.

*The bitrate displayed here depends on the input material, of course.

Besides, CCCP contains an outdated beta version of ffdshow. Beta 3 might lead to better results.

Edit: It's sufficient to install the new ffdshow build over the one shipped with CCCP, no need to reinstall anything.

wmp11 using the wmptse plug-in

You mentioned in the first post something about a WMPTSE plugin. After a bit of searching I came to the conclusion that it is only there for the purpose of adding Ogg/Flac files to the media library, right? Have you tried disabling it and playing back something of your library (if that is possible then) or playlists?
In my eyes it seems something is broken with WMP11 and when I said
Quote

I meant WMP11 and not CCCP.
Anyway, the ffdshow build bundled with CCCP isn't so old at all. And it isn't a tryout-build. I wouldn't recommend installing two things for the same purpose (especially with codecs).

PS: Junon, for your issue with WiMP crashing when you use libavcodec, I don't even have the Tremor decoder in my options and I can play oggs in WiMP. Maybe this Tremor option is in the new versions of ffdshow? Hopefully a new package of CCCP arrives soon..

EDIT: Well, to be sure everything is getting to the right filter, download the CCCP Insurgent and make a test render on an ogg-file, then save the log (File -> Save log) and post it here. After that we can be sure that WMP is at fault and not the filters.

Beta 3 replaces the build packaged with CCCP, hence there won't be two things for the same purpose installed. It might be worth testing it, since it applies the latest versions of the DirectShow filters without being an unstable and therefore non-recommendable nightly build.

It has been in the sourceforge builds for quite some time now, being the default Vorbis decoder after installation. I don't remember the exact features packed into the CCCP ffdshow build, though I wonder for what reason the CCCP team decided not to use Tremor - after all, it is Xiph's official integer decoder.

I don't exactly understand how it would 'replace' the existing CCCP build of ffdshow but are you sure it won't give troubles afterwards with the CCCP installation?

Yeah, after all they have their own build. Take a look at the very informative FAQ here.

Nonetheless first I would like the OP to disable the WMPTSE plug-in and post an insurgent scan. After that he can still install the beta 3 of ffdshow-tryout.

CCCP isn't an application of itself, but merely a compilation of different filters, splitters and even entire stand-alone programs. A list of this compilation's parts can be found here: http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php...tall_and_why.3F
You can update older versions of these parts without breaking anything, as long as the updates run stably on your system and are compatible to their predecessors.

WMPTSE allows reading the metadata of certain audio formats, which are officially unsupported by Windows Media Player, including Vorbis, FLAC, WavPack, MPEG-4-Audio, Musepack, Monkey's Audio and a few others. Adding the files to the Media Library is made possible by a working DirectShow filter instead, WMPTSE just further processes the data. But nonetheless, it might indeed help to deactivate WMPTSE while trying to get the DirectShow filters running, simply for stability reasons of Windows Media Player. I remember some issues I had myself, when I was still WMPTSE in conjunction with the illiminable filters. Scanning the music archive had caused a huge memory leak, forcing me to kill the wmplayer.exe process prior to it locking up the system. The issue was resolved by reinstalling both WMPTSE and the filters.

Getting officially unsupported formats to run flawlessly with Windows Media Player has always been a tricky job. As a user of Amarok and Winamp (depending on the OS I'm just running) I actually wouldn't ever have tried to do so, if friends and family didn't insist on using their most familiar audio player on this computer. Despite the annoying compatibility issues with third-party software, of course.

OGG file in WMP11 - missing track length

CCCP isn't an application of itself, but merely a compilation of different filters, splitters and even entire stand-alone programs. A list of this compilation's parts can be found here: http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php...tall_and_why.3F
You can update older versions of these parts without breaking anything, as long as the updates run stably on your system and are compatible to their predecessors.

I know that much too, I didn't said CCCP would be a codec itself. And I linked to that page too, you know? But when you say it wouldn't break anything to install the newer (other) build over the old one, then it's OK. I just thought it would be better to first remove the old one (just reinstall CCCP without ffdshow). But one thing is for sure, as you can see on the wiki page, the CCCP build has many customized options which the other ffdshows don't have.

OGG file in WMP11 - missing track length

Your test render looks good so far, only a bit messy your system. Don't try every codec pack you come across . Well CCCP is an exception

You could uninstall CoreAAC as AAC decoding gets handled by ffdshow. But that is only secondary.

We can say now that WMP is the culprit. Try disabling the WMPTSE plug-in, as suggested by Junon and me.

With wmptse disabled, the result is the same unfortunately, with the added problem that if I import a new Ogg file into my library in wmp11, none of the tags come over.

I wonder, does anyone actually have ogg files in their wmp11 library that display track length ok?

I know one way round this........ I might just give up and transcode all my oggs into mp3s.

I know that much too, I didn't said CCCP would be a codec itself. And I linked to that page too, you know?

I linked to the position where ffdshow as an independent application is listed. From your question above...

I don't exactly understand how it would 'replace' the existing CCCP build of ffdshow...

...it seemed like this fact hadn't been entirely clear before. If it was, then I misunderstood you. In that case, sorry about that.

No good solution. Or do you really want to sacrifice quality by sticking to Windows Media Player, though there are decent, Vorbis-compatible alternatives as well? Ones which support ReplayGain and the gapless playback capability of the codec, making music playback much more enjoyable?

Edit: gedh, could you please pack the long Test Render log into ['codebox'] ['/codebox'] (without the quotes)? This would make the thread way more readable.
