FLAC shortcuts in Windows XP not working

Hi all - basically I am attempting to set-up shortcuts from my main FLAC folder to another collection of FLAC files on a separate folder (indeed on a separate hard-drive).

I create the shortcuts in folder two via right-click, copy them over to folder one, all looks fine.

However when I then put shortcuts into Winamp they lose the song's name and appear as a code such as 'EDDIEC-2'. The claimed time of the song is also messed up, e.g. from 3 minutes ten seconds to twenty-two minutes thirty-seven seconds! When I actually try and play the file I get a short burst of fax-type electronic noise, then Winamp moves on to the next working song on playlist (i.e. a non-shortcutted one).

I have checked MP3s and shortcuts seem to work fine, so I assume this  is a FLAC-specific problem - any ideas hugely appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

I have never actually thought of trying to play shortcuts. I use playlists if I want to be able to click in a specific location to play something which isn't there...

I just tried it, and none of my players play shortcuts regardless of format, so maybe it's winamp that parse links to mp3's specifically?

edit: Sorry, I found out that they are indeed playable. I first tried a shortcut to an mp3 with fb2k, media player classic, zoom player, vlc and quicktime, but it didn't work.

But I tried windows media player now (mplayer2.exe), and that worked fine. After that I tried again with MPC, and then it worked... :\ Zoom player too, and it also shows the folder.jpg.  I don't want to install any directshow filters for flac though, so I can't say if that works.

J8ee - Cheers for the speedy response, and excellent point about simply setting up playlists for immediate access to remote files.

When I get some time I will also try allocating FLAC files to my Winamp DirectShow filter to see if that allows short-cut playback - though not sure if that is the best decoder for the format. Incidentally I retried MP3 shortcuts in Winamp, and noticed that the title is reformatted into an alpha-numerical code, though the actual song plays fine.

Thanks again for the extremely helpful assistance.
