CD Catalog Number Tagging

Is there a commonly used tag for storing a CD Catalog Number?

Most asian and many european disks are released with a catalog number that uniquely defines that album. For example this (Eng/Jap) album has a catalog number of "GNCA-1050". I have long stored these catalog numbers along with track information in the comment tag of my files. I have also seen many other people store this information in the comment tag.  I have also seen it used in a "CDID" field however I was under the distinct impression that CDID was intended for quite another purpose (a string generated from an album's table of contents, used to search CDDB etc).  I use this catalog number quite often, from naming my album art files to searching for chart listings and reviews.  I would think this is the sort of information deserving of a tag.  The closest thing I see on western CDs is the ISBN number.

I could easily start using my own custom tag of %CATALOG%, %CATALOG NUMBER% or something equally generic however I would like to know if anyone else is storing this information. If so, what tag do you use?

I've been using the comment tag to store it up until now.
But i am starting to use a custom %catalog no% tag.

CATALOG is a reserved tag name (for UPC/EAN code from audio cd) and DISCID is used to store CDDB information, so CDID seems to be OK for storing a CD Catalog number.

I rip to cuesheets with EAC and replace EAC's standard and, for me, rather useless, COMMENT field of "ExactAudioCopy vx.xx" with the disc's catalog number. It's always worked like a charm for me, although it isn't like I have another choice because foobar2000 doesn't currently support any other fields in cuesheets.

foobar2000 currently supports any fields if you use embedded cuesheets.

Via REM lines? Or do we have to add more tags to the file?

You need to embed cuesheet in a file first and add it to playlist, then additional tags/fields can be seamlessly added or edited through *usual* Properties->Metadata editor dialog (no more REM etc. hassle). Actual CUESHEET isn't being modified, but fb2k adds additional CUE_TRACK##_TAG tags to the file.

Okay, thanks. I'd still prefer the more flexible use of REM but, in the context of this topic and since I don't otherwise use the field, COMMENT works for me as a store for CDs' catalog numbers.

Don't ask me where I got it from, but some long time ago I found LABELNO tag somewhere and I'm using it now.
Storing in COMMENT doesn't work for me because I store this information not just "for fun" but I use it to connect a track with a cover art (named "TOCT-22117.jpg" or something like this). It becomes useful when I have some single tracks (not full albums) from different albums and I want to store them together in one folder.

Thank you everyone for your input. I am not interested in working with cue sheets but I'm sure someone else probably is.  I think I am leaning toward using CDID tag but I'm gonna sit back and wait for more input before I go converting my collection over. I generally try to keep my files as lean as possible and am hesitant to use custom tags that arent widely implemented (if you came accross one of my files, where would you expect to find the information?).  Can anyone think of a good reason not to use CDID?

Machekku: using the number for linking single covers was exactly what prompted me to start the thread, my existing use of COMMENT just isnt very practical :)

Resurrecting this old thread as I have the following problem:

I have mostly an electronic music collection in the form of eps and want to store the the catalog # of each relase. This # is of the form "<label code> <id of release>". An example would be "aw003".
I'm using tag&rename and in the ID3V2 tags it has a "catalog #" field but I couldn't find it in the ID3V2 spec...So is it mapped to a variable in fb2k ? The idea is to be able to display the collection by label and alphabetically by cat # for each label. Should I just use the comment field for cat # instead ?

tag a test album using the "catalog #" in tag & rename, then load the mp3 up in foobar and see what field it is mapped to.

good advice: tag&rename "cat #" is mapped to "comment" and  "label" to "publisher".

I just tested it myself and found out that the catalog# tag in Tag&Rename is mapped to COMMENT CATALOG NUMBER in foobar2000, which I cannot find in the tag mapping reference. What frame is it?

Use axone.jar to determine the frame.

EDIT: My guess would be TXXX for something not on the tag mappings page.

Thanks for the tip.

According to Axone it's a COMM frame, which is consistent with what bubbleguuum wrote above. It is not mapped as COMMENT however, but as COMMENT CATALOG NUMBER.
It's not the only extra COMM frame though: Tag&Rename's  Mood tag, for example, is also a COMM frame which in foobar is mapped as COMMENT MUSICMATCH MOOD.

I don't understand, I thought only TXXX frames could be used for user-defined tags.
