Thinking of rockboxing ipod

Hi I'm thinking of rockboxing my ipod mainly fro the different themes, the standard OS is too plane.  Before I install it I was wondering if I can still change back to the default or completely erase rockbox if I don't like it and because my ipods still under warranty.  Also what affect does rockbox have on speed, battery life and are the EQ's any better coz the standard ones are crap.  No wonder why people say the ipod has crap sound quality .

You're better off posting on their forums mate.

These questions will have been asked and answered already, so have a search.

I've used Rockbox on my iriver H120 for over a year now, and everything imo is better; battery life, WPS (While Playing Screen [aka theme]), codec support.  You can get rid of Rockbox from the player, but I think if someone really knew what they were doing and really 'hacked' about with it, they probably find out you've been using Rockbox. BUT I doubt they'd (a) know how to do that &/or (b) have the time to do it.

If you look on the Rockbox comparison page in the Rockbox wiki you will notice that Rockbox firmware battery life is the same as specific types of DAP. It comes with two boot loaders, the one that came with the original hardwares firmware and the Rockbox firmware.

Yes you can totally restore the iPod with Apple's own iPod restore software. That will completely restore your iPod to brand new (software wise) condition.

If you're using Rockbox and on an iPod I'd use my iPod Experimental Build. It contains many useful patches such as Album Art and stuff.

These custom builds seem nice but the rockbox version it uses is written nowhere on the page. Some kind of cvs date would be fine.
[edit]I've just noticed that it is in the filenames.

@damaki: Damn, I must of overwrote my the front page with an old file (the new one contained CVS date info). Consider it changed

@neomoe: In which way doesn't it work? I've had plenty of people download the Nano build without problems, so if you can give me any info on how it isn't working I can help you.

the ipod boots up normally, but then it just freezes. I have to reset it. this happens when I try to explore the rockbox-folder.

Hmmm, not sure whats happening here. So it only freezes when you access the '.rockbox' folder. How about other folders?

I'd also suggest completely resetting your settings when you first start using my build. You can do this by booting up Rockbox with the hold button in the 'hold' position.

Let me know, if that helps.

There is only one official build and thats from www.rockbox.org. I download the source's from the Rockbox CVS and then apply the patches, when needed  I just update my source with the all the changes from the CVS keeping it up to date.

.... I've been notified... beautiful work, man! especially the pause/resume whenever the cord is pulled is so nice...
using tagcache right now.. runs smoothly.. well done, all!
why not adding a theme by default, like the brushed metal (my favourite ;-D )

one question: how do i use albumart?

- you can restore your ipod with ease.

- speed? runs smoothly.

- battery life is shorter. (not that much though) but hey - I can play vorbis gaplessly, can use themes and other nice stuff. battery life is not a great problem for  me. my first ipod was a G2 - so I am used to much much worse battery life.

- you have a graphical EQ.

Sorry about this late report but I work in Belgium on week and have no net connection in the mean time.
So I've been experiencing strange lockups on various files that could be only resolved by a soft reboot on the ipod. All texts on screen disappeared, music froze, and so did the controls. Those seems to be kind of random, which is exactly the worse situation for a bug report. :/
If I've got enough time I'll perhaps try and make one or two custom builds, with less patches, from your patch list to figure out which one creates this mess.
[edit:]the version I used for tests is the ipod color 2006-07-20 one, as far as I can remember the date.
