what is mpeg 1 layer 1 ?

hello, I demuxed an avi file with a strange audio soundtrack.
I thought it was mp3 but winamp refused to play it and
showed it was mpeg 1 layer 1.
Is there a winamp plugin for such files ?

Winamp should be able to decode MP1 files if I am not mistaken. It has built-in support for Layer I, II and III. That file information is often wrong. I saw Winamp pretty often reporting some Layer III files as Layer II with emphasis bit set, etc.

Mpeg 1 Layer 1 is AFAIK only used in the now obsolete DCC (Digital Compact Cassette) by Philips.

"Layer-1: Its ISO target bitrate is 192 kbps per audio channel. Layer-1 is a simplified version of Layer-2. It is most useful for bitrates around the "high" bitrates around or above 192 kbps. A version of Layer-1 is used as "PASC" with the DCC recorder."

yes, winamp was wrong... in fact I found out by renaming the file extension to  .wav that it was ADPCM, not mpeg 1 layer 1 !

thanks for the info on mp1, that's interesting. I once had a portable dcc recorder, this was crap. I'm glad it's a dead format.
