Difference between m3u and pls

In Winamp there are two choices for playlist formats, .m3u and .pls. What is the difference between the two, and why are there two?

Why are there two?  Sounds like a metaphysical question.  You have one format "M3U", and another, "PLS".  Why are there two?  Because there is one more than one.

Save a playlist in both formats and then open both files in Notepad to see the difference.  There isn't much really, they both store the playlist in text format.

I would use M3U as it is more widespread.  Is PLS simply a Winamp playlist?
I'm on a horse.
