Audiograbber repackaged

I use EAC for my CD collection backup, but for casual and simple ripping of CD's, the good old freeware Audiograbber is still a great tool, IMO.  I've repackaged it with the newest and fastest codecs avaliable. There seems to be no restriction of doing this from the author of Audiograbber (if there are, please remove this post) - but he encourages people to distribute his setup file from their own sites. Package contains:

- Audiograbber 1.83 build 1 exe and help files.
- AGTestAndCopy.exe (reached from Start menu) - created by me.
- Ogg libvorbis.dll aoTuVb4 Lancer build (9 jul 2005)
- lame_enc.dll 3.97 alpha 12
- Optionally enable Fhg mp3 Pro Codec
- Connection to installed WMA 9 codec (unchanged)
- 26 selectable languages
- Improved default settings, e.g. -V2 --vbr-new for lame

For a limited time, you can get it here: Audiograbber183rp6.exe (2 Mb)

Note: AGTestAndCopy.exe only works with the English UI. Also, it relies upon that the main AG window is becoming the active window after the Test and after the Copy phase. This will normally happen, but if you work on the PC, you may have to manually activate it.

If it matters, you always get the latest Fhg mp3 Pro codec either by updating WMP10, or if you don't want to install it:
1) Download WMP10 to C:\MP10Setup.exe
2) Save the following text to a file, MP10Fhg.bat, and double click it:
Code: [Select]
C:\MP10Setup.exe /C /T:C:\MP10Temp
move /Y C:\MP10Temp\l3codecp.acm %windir%\system32
del /Q C:\MP10Temp\*.*
rmdir C:\MP10Temp
del C:\MP10Setup.exe

Thanks for repacking. Pretty nice for quickly ripping some stuff without fiddling with commandline parameters and encoder exes. I do that stuff too, but sometimes it simply annoys me

I still don't see why Audiograbber has a test mode, but no test and copy mode for verification :B

I was thinking the very same thing yesterday. It would have been soo easy to implement

Well, I created a small plugin that does Test & Copy! It is now bundled with the new setup package (rp3).      Launch it from Audiograbber start menu - it will bring up Audiograbber if it isn't already running.

This actually makes Audiograbber very useful, because you will know when you have a perfect rip!

/Oh,  I forgot. To activate, simply select CD | Test in the menu - it will then do Test and Copy, and Verify (compare)!

Thanks, very nice. But could you make the results window more readable? (allign
the results in fixed columns and maybe highlight failed tracks?)

Ok, I won't put a lot of work into that plugin, but I see that some small tweaks could be made. I think I'll to reup the rp2 setup of AG, and make a separate download for this plugin, as it is likely to change a few times.

Vividly, and that's the reason I never gave it another try. What's more surprising is that after all these years I'd actually view a thread about it since I typically ignore and avoid it from that first impression many years ago.

I didn't use AG at that time - used CDex quite early, but I remember that my very first ripper was some weird russian shareware using dist10 code - I was surprised to immediately spot artifacts in all my 128kb encodes (I read it was "very close to CD quality" somewhere  )

Sweet package and a great idea!

BTW, wich is the best ripping mode in AG, i've used Dynamic synch width, but it skips some CD tracks that are 1 minute long or less, whats up with that?

Is Buffered Burst Copy similar to EAC's Burst Mode?, if so, what does Unbuffered Burst Copy do?, and should i set a predetermined ripping speed, or leave it at "Default"?

Lotsa questions, sorry
we was young an' full of beans

I've uploaded rp4, which prints formatted each line that have different CRCs.

I think Buffered Burst is the same as EAC's Burst mode - I never had problems with that. The help file tells pretty well what the different modes means. Leave the read speed at Default.

Quality: Using default setting for lame and when there is no checksum diffs in your rip (Test & Copy), you should get exactly the same quality as when using EAC secure mode with lame --preset fast standard. However, the bundled vorbis codec is both faster and better than lame with comparable target bitrates, from the latest listening tests I've seen around here.

As one of the moderators for the Audiograbber forums I think this is an excellent release especially with the test and copy so thanks from me. Jackie (AG Developer) was working on secure ripping but as I recall he was running into caching problems.

I have been looking at doing the same with patent free codecs for some time now to help beginners but was running into problems.

However one of the other moderators created a batch file with allows users to open Audiograbber with settings of their choice. A bit like EAC's profiles. Do you want this batch file to incorporate into this release?

On another note the German Audiograbber forum also craeted their own Audiograbber package with a seperate lame plug-in which was designed for beginners in mind.

Thanks. Sorry for all these versions, but there were some small issues with the Test & Copy plugin, so the latest package is rp5.  Read the Note in the first post as well.

As an aside, I've just had a look at the audiograbber forum and there were 768 guests browsing the boards.

Edit
Just had another look and there were only 10 guests so I suppose there must have been a glitch somewhere. Sorry!

I will announce this version on the Audiograbber forums later today. I've found the batch file if you want it.

Like many user Audiograbber was my first audio ripper.

I know jackie is working on next version ( 2.0 ) I hope we will get a nice GUI improvement. As well as some official update on encoders.

For now this is a great package.

Yes, I had been using AG for a long time. I am still using it as my main ripping, recording (from tapes) and encoding program. Very easy to use.
A new version is badly needed with some improvements.

You don't EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER package alphas with something that people will be relying on.

Instead use Lamne 3.96.1 or 3.90.3.

Well, I for one rely on the latest alpha builds. A recent poll revealed that most people around here are using the latest lame builds as well. The alphas 10-12 has been around for a while now, and have shown to be very reliable. Beta1 is released, but no matter which version I bundle (including the stable ones), it will be outdated at some point.

Best alternative would probably be not to bundle lame at all.

I've tried your AudioGrabber package #6 and I have some problems with it.

1) tycho, I really don't get how to make your test & copy script work. Can anymone write me simply but throughtly a step by step what I have to do?

I've run the agtestandcopy.exe so the fist appeared in the system tray. There is a notice that the script is paused but there's no way how to uncheck the option. The other thing is that the fist is sometimes changing into cross but again it shows that the script is paused so I don't know what to do with that...

I've never noticed 2 times reading the CD so I really don't have a clue if it is necessary to do a test and then to do ripping... (?)

2) Problem is that the program is unstable, when I run it any I want to have it minimized (and work in other programs) the AudioGrabber window gets in the better occasion frozen and appears functional when the whole task is complete or in a worse case that the program crashes...

PS: I hope, that my problems lies in my not that good English rather than I'm something missing...
Sorry for my poor English, I'm trying to get better... ;)

Have you read the NOTE in the first post?
- Make sure you use default (English) AG userinterface.
- If you are working on the PC while ripping, or minimizing AG, you must manually activate the main window after testing/copying phases. It works best if your PC only does ripping.
- Don't touch the tray icon. As long as it not is blinking 'X' it is running fine.

- I haven't seen the unstable problems you mention.

OK, I'll give it a try...

OK, I'll follow your suggestion!

So to clear it up, It's not necessary to do anything special, just run your T&C.exe , have an English language set and have my AG maximized?
No need for doing "test" and then ripping?
Sorry for my poor English, I'm trying to get better... ;)

Ah, it is burried in one of the posts only:

To activate the test and copy feature, select CD | Test in the menu. It will do both Test and Copy! When you select Grab, it will only do Copy as usual.
