Yamaha RX-V1500

Yup, it's not a piece of equipment for audiophiles, but a good compromise between what I'd love and what I can afford.

Anyone can recommend it? Alternatives (in the same price range)?

Thanks.

From a repairists point of view, these ones arent to bad. As long as you treat them well, then they will generally last quite well. Audio quality wise? Cant help, only ever tested them on crummy half blown speakers i had laying around the shop.

What are your requirements? To me 8 channels, 170W each is ludicrous, unless you are running a cinema.

At least 4 optical inputs, support of all the latest DTS and Dolby Digital standards, 7.1, HDTV compatibility, good audio quality (course it heavily depends on the speakers too) and price in the ballpark of € 600.
The SILENT CINEMA feature is a nice bonus.

EDIT: grammar.

Panasonic SA-XR70? It's the latest in a good series, but prefers easy (flat) impedence loads. I don't know if it has all the features you mention, but it does works with digital input.

I own the XR55, which is actually the newest.  I bought it for $235 from Amazon to replace the Onkyo 501 I paid $280.  Using Polk RTi6 speakers.  I will only comment on music, which I do in stereo mode, bi-amped by the reciever:

From the 501 to this was like lifting a veil from my music.  Much clearer, cleaner, and crisper.  The soundstage is ENORMOUS by comparison.  Highs are much more "there," for lack of a better word.  Mid-range, not exactly Polk's strongpoint in my opinion, are much more articulated.

At 9 lbs, I have books that weigh more.  I can hold it with one hand.  I'm now in a college dorm and this item is invaluable to me.  I know people from AVSForums who bought 2 and are using a pre-amp with 7.1 outs, y-split, into 2 of these for 7.1 bi-amped goodness!

Any questions, feel free to hit me up on e-mail.

ALSO:  If you look at the product comparisons, the 1500 isn't 170 watt RMS, but dynamic.  120 watt RMS is what they claim.  Would you notice a difference?  Probably not.

Glad you like are pleased with these. I have to say that those people on AVSforums are rather confused. Analog input using a preamp for volume control means the signal passes through an ADC, and not only that but not even at the full resolution of the ADC (because of the volume control). Let the amp control the volume, which it does by altering the switching voltage. And give it a digital input!

Thank you for yoru reply, checked the specs on the Panasonic website: it does support all the latest standards but it's only 6.1 (not 7.1) and I'm gonna be using it for movies mainly.
