WinLAME Help plz!

Hi there, I'm new at this forum and I hope you can help me... It's about WinLAME. I always use the "MP3 portable player" encoding preset because it makes the files a lot smaller and (at least I) cannot notice the difference in the sound.

Anyway, everything was normal until one day I tried to convert some songs and it showed this error:
"While processing the file:[filepath here]
the following error occured

Error description
Reporting module: Lame MP3 encoder
Error Code: 1
Error Message: could not open output file"

I already tried with several files and several conversion formats (like OGG) but it keeps showing this, after the message windows shows an error message too (it has to close the program). Please help!

Maybe you're encoding to a file-name that already exists in the folder? Or folder is read-only?
Anyway, if Windows terminates the program, there seems to be some bug in it. Think about trying different frontend.

Excuse me what you mean with frontend? another program? It's a shame, I'm not very good with english... sorry. If you mean another program, please can you guys tell me the name of another program (preferable freeware) that uses lame and has presets like WinLAME? I've found others but they can only rip from cd's and I need to change my mp3's bitrate, not to rip. Thank you all again.

a frontend is a programm that uses a backend, the actual programm you want to use.
in your case, you want to use the LAME MP3 encoder. not from commandline but with a GUI. so you need a frontend that sends commands to LAME.

see here for a list of some frontends.

edit: most frontends don't have built in presets but they are easy to configure and you simply can save them most of the time.

You could give a try to CDex
It's a frontend cd extractor which is shipped with lame_enc dll.
it offers all available presets and another options.
you can even use it as frontend for lame exe.
but as you were using winlame which uses nLame.dll,
cdex might be convinient to you.
and yes! cdex offers transcoding (that is converting mp3->mp3 using different bitrates)
