Playing .ogg files in a browser

I want to set up my browser to run a program automatically when I click on a link that has a .ogg file as it's target.

I've looked at this in IE6 and Firefox. I can get so far ...

If I set up foobar2000 as the default player, then I get a dialog come up that lets me play the file. In both browsers, the dialog has a checkbox to allow the browser to always use the program, but ...  ... the checkbox is greyed out.

By comparison, if I click on a .wav link, recplayer runs automatically and invisibly; if I click on an .mp3 link, then Windows Media Player runs automatically and visibly.

  Help. Why is the option grayed out - can I fix it? Is there another way to get .ogg links to play automatically?

If you have the Ogg Directshow filters installed (which enables Ogg to be played under Windows Media Player), they should play the same way mp3s do. I guess.

When I installed Foobar it had an option to associate the .ogg extension with foobar so that foobar would be the default player.  The other way to go it is to go to windows explorer/my computer, go to tools, folder options, click on the file types tab, and change or set the default player for this file type.

Don't think that is what he is talking about. Anyways, another option would be launching fooassoc from the fb2k folder.

Try using VideoLAN.... it can play Vorbis (and all other files supported) direct from the browser... if this is what you want.

I think you have to copy the plugin from the VideoLAN folder to the Firefox plugins folder...

Thanks guys,

I tried the Ogg DirectShow filters and they worked fine  . I'll try VideoLAN as well and see if I prefer that.
