mp3<->mp4

Greetings from the noo-est of noobs.

Just installed foobar2000 v0.8.3-special. Downloaded the Columns Ui and installed all on WinXP pro sp2.

Under preferences, core, context menu items, there is a setting that looks like  -->  Converter(ACC,MP3<->MP4)

My thinking is that this allows conversion from either mp4 to mp3 or visa versa.

My question is: Is that in fact what this setting is for and if it is, how is it enabled and used from the Columns UI ???

I need to convert a file from mp4 (m4a) to mp3.

Thanks.

That setting is for multiplexing AAC or MP3 streams into MP4, or stripping said streams from MP4. More likely, you need the diskwriter component, and a copy of LAME.exe, perhaps to transcode for some portable player. (Woo, I give the answers in a vague way, but leave it to others to elaborate. I am mean.)

Thanks code54. Yes, you really know how to dispense tough love. Are spankings extra,,,

It looks like the diskwriter component is included in my current set up. Now,,, searching,,, for lame.exe,,,,,

My ultimate goal is to make the file available to play on a web site using Macromedia Flash. Right now, as far as I can tell, Macromedia does not support mp4 format. Not even a mention of it on their web site.

I have the file in mp4 format as supplied by a client and I have no other recording of it unless I buy a cd and make an mp3 but,,,,$$$ So,, I just need some way to convert to mp3 from mp4.

Converting any lossy format (or in this case; your mp3 files) to another lossy format (in this case: mp4) would result in huge quality loss, so you really don't want to transencode mp3 to mp4.

It will result in a quality loss.  I don't know that you can automatically say that it will be a huge quality loss, or if the degradation will even be audible.

Yes,, there will be a loss of quality. This is for a website to be played on pc systems so I am not sure if it matters so much.

Still have no method of making the conversion though. Don't feel like messing with lame.exe and not even sure that its capable of doing what I want.

No time,,

There's not much "messing around" with lame.exe. Get it, throw it somewhere nice and cosy (maybe your foobar folder), go into foobar preferences. Now klick on "diskwriter" and change the "Output Presets" to a lame profile. Press the edit button, and specify the location of lame.exe. Now in the playlist rightklick on the file you want to convert, and press Convert/Run conversion.

But I am not sure converting the file is even needed, isn't mp4 just some sort of container containing an mp3 file ? If so, shouldn't it be possible to extract that file ? Just guessing here, but I bet there are enough experts around to answer that

edit: seems like i messed something up there, forget that last statement and try the conversion part

mp4 typically is a container for an aac file, not mp3

diskwriter does not show up in my preferences. The foobar site says its an inlcuded component in the download but it does not show up in my foobar directory.

Who says music on PCs can't (or shouldn't) be HiFi?
I think that's what most of us here are striving for.

when you are surfing on the web, it's rare to give great importance to the website music, for my part, I'm more interested with its content. Moreover, music needs bandwith as a consequence lossy formats which are generally lighter than lossless (or lossy encoded with high performances) are better for a nice browse on the internet.. It's my point of vue

(and I'm hardly convinced by people saying that their PC sound is incredible with the noise of the fans in the computer which make a big deal of disturbance to listen the tiny differences between several formats, encoding etc.. but it's also my own way to see that point)

not only aac, it's container for video(mpeg1/2/4/AVC), audio(mp2/3/aac/vorbis/amr/celp...) and subtitle.

Wouldn't it be easiest to use iTunes to convert the file to mp3?
