AAC vs MP4

I have been looking into using a certain audio format for small clips hosted on a website. After testing out various codecs available, my personal preference goes to the AAC format.

Now my question is whether it would be better to use (raw) AAC or the MP4 container? I've read that the container should be better in the long run (compatibility). However since the clips will be available on a public website it has to be possible to play them with the bigger players around. I could be doing something wrong, but my WinAmp does play the AAC file, but not the MP4.

For encoding I have been using the Nero Frontend, which allows the end user to choose between the AAC and MP4 format.

Winamp should be abel to play AAC with MP4 container. Perhaps your Winamp need's to be updated or something. I would suggest using the MP4/M4A container.

If you use HE-AAC, I think Winamp's MP4 support is broken for that (there are plugins that fix it). But for normal LC-AAC, yes, MP4 should work even with Winamp...

M$ Windows Media Player will play mp4 or aac,
if u install mp4 parser, directshow aac decoder and aac parser,
because it's a dshow based player :)

This may be offtopic, but if you are concerned about compatibility you should use MP3 instead of AAC/MP4, IMO.

MP3 is compatible with everything out of the box.
