New iAudio X5 with FLAC support and video

Just saw this new posting on Cowan's site about their new iAudio X5. They even prominantly say it is the first player to support FLAC in Korea , and only the second FLAC supporting player in the world. Has many nice features. Check it out at:

A quote about their "Strong Music Format Support":
Strong Music Format Support
It supports MP3, OGG, WMA, WAV files, as well as FLAC (a lossless compressed codec). The first player in Korea to support this format, and only the second in the world

Looks like they have the level 0, 1, 2 limitation on FLAC. Why?

MP3 : MPEG 1/2/2.5 Layer 3, ~320kbps, ~48khz, mono/stereo WMA(ASF) : ~256kbps, ~48khz, mono/stereo OGG : ~q10, ~44.1khz, mono/stereo FLAC : compression level 0/1/2, ~44.1khz, mono/stereo WAV : ~48khz, 16bit, mono/stereoXviD MPEG-4, CBR ~256kbps, up to 160x128, 15 fps JPEG

Just wanted to let people know there was a new OGG and FLAC player coming. It is good to see more players supporting OGG and FLAC.

Note: This player is not to be confused with the similar named iAudio 5, which is already out and doesn't support FLAC.

Third, I think - before it came the Rio Karma and the iAudio M3.
Looks really tantalizing, but I'd much rather wait for perpendicular DAPs to come around. Shouldn't take too long - and besides, I have my trusty Zen Xtra with me!

Why would a device only support FLAC up to 2?  That seems useless.  Doesn't flac actually decode *faster* when using 8?  That almost seems useless that it wouldn't even support the default FLAC mode.

FLAC <=2 uses only the fixed polynomial predictors, which can be decoded using addition only.  FLAC >=3 may (and mostly does) use LPC predictors, which require multiplication to decode.  I'm not familiar with the hardware in the M3, but fast multipliers are very expensive in terms of chip real estate and thus a reasonable thing to omit from an embedded processor.

It even could be, that iAudio will add Musepack Support via Firmware updated. I've tooked a look at there Audio Software, that they bundle with each Player and the added MPC Support 2 Month ago...

It's for sale now on Cowon's site.  I'm waiting until Newegg has it, their prices will be much cheaper.  Flac level 8 and Futurama, you can't beat that.

The only thing to be aware of is those iAudio players don't have a tag database in them so all your music is sorted by folders (like your hard drive). If that's the way you like it then, I hear, that it is an awesome player.
If, however, you want your music sorted by Album, Artists, etc... it may not be the one for you.

Double check to make sure I'm right about this but I was going to buy the previous version but the lack of a tag database discoursaged me and I ended up with a Dell DJ30 (which I'm pretty happy with).

is this true?

According to a few reviews I've read, it is true. No tag database because apparently Korean users don't use it.

I just ordered one of these so I'll know for sure in a few days. Personally, it wasn't a big deal to me because I've (anally) organized all my music into directories anyway.
