AUDIOTRAK Prodigy 192 or 7.1 LT?

It's the 1st time since I've become concerned with audio quality that I buy a PCI soundcard - previously I've always had laptops.

I need a card that provides:

5.1 accelerated 3D audio (my room is far too small for 7.1) for the large amounts of games i still play.

optical-out with AC3/DTS pass-though, and 44.1KHz non-resampling output - music and movie playback, as the pc is an integral part of my Hi-Fi/AV System.

good audio-recording - mainly for when i record my friends dj'ing in clubs, a bit of mixing with external sources in post-production. this doesent happen that often, but often enough to warrant including it in the requirements.

------------

i narrowed it down to these 2 audiotrak cards, but im open to other suggestions.

im edging towards the 192 myself, but seeing as im a total newbie in the field.. i ask

£100 uk is about the maximum im prepared to spend. the Prodigy 192 is £99.99.

i understand there's a terratec card that can be flashed and used with the audiotrak firmware/drivers... im rather wary of any such procedure, ive had a few bad experiences with analogous upgrades.

What are your suggestions?

The Prodigy 7.1 LT has a better DAC than the 192. Get the LT, it's the better choice.

Yes.. after some rather lenghty seraching on the net i arrived at the same conclusion.

I was opting for the m-audio revolution at one point, but with my setup I'd find the lack of optical-out crippling.

So.. is the 71.LT the best Envy24 card out there?

I've got a Prodigy 7.1 and have to say that I am quite pleased with it.  The ASIO support is pretty solid (great for foobar) and the entire install package, i.e., drivers is tiny yet powerful.  It also allows for 192kHz resampling and I can actually hear the difference, not like with some cards where it is resampled to 48kHz for the output.  I don't know about the optical features as I do not use them.

It also has a built in headphone amp, you enable it and can actually hear the relay on the card switch over.  It helps to drive those slightly picker cans very well.  It isn't a $500 HP amp, but it is useful to say the least.

It is a good solid card and for the money and the fact that it doesn't say Creative Labs anywhere makes me happy.
