Mastering glitch in Jarre - Chronologie

Here is a nice screenshot of soundforge, from track 6 @ 1:09 of Jean Michel Jarre - Chronologie, "Digitally re-mastered 96 Khz - 24 bit technology by Scott Hull, Masterdisk, New York" (written down from the cover).
I think the picture speaks for itself.
Looks like (as well as sounds like) "loud" samples wrapped around instead of clipped. Not to mention obvious clipping around the artifact.
Not a ripping glitch (got bit-identical results from two different drives), glitch also present when playing from my expanium portable.
No such glitch in copies other people have (apparently made from older masters - not-so-accidentially those copies also have lower replaygain on a side note).
I can't believe they made me pay my money for this garbage that needs fixing in an editor to be properly listenable. Did they even listen to it themselves ?

[edit]
Some numbers, as requested by people on IRC:
From MPC 1.14 --xlevel --standard encode:
replaygain_track_gain = -5.89 dB
replaygain_track_peak = 1.200044
replaygain_album_gain = -6.55 dB
replaygain_album_peak = 1.294927

Wow, that's pretty bad! The right channel hits full scale alot too. Pretty shameful from this artist too (well, shameful for any artist) since his CDs are normally pretty good.

I had the Evanescence CD single recently (friend wanted it put on tape) and I think that can put your sample to shame. Trying record it onto tape without introducing any audible distortion was near impossible due to the amount of existing clipping.

When will this madness end?

Once people stop buying such crappy CDs (or whatever).

Edit: Or bring them back to the shop after seeing the bad mastering.

I bought it online and I'm not willing to bother returning it. I'll rather download an encode of older master that is free of this issue (since I *paid* for the album, it can't be considered piracy anymore), or stick with hand-edited version (glitch easily fixed, but clipping is still there).
To avoid buying poorly mastered CDs you need to find someone having exact same master before and ask for a report. Or use *cough* p2p networks as "try-before-buy service", but then you can't be sure which master you've found and whether glitches are ripper fault or master fault. Additionally, not all online shops let you verify which master you're getting - there's quite a few different masters of this one (seems the page doesn't even list the one I have).

I have the 24 bit remaster listed there, which doesn't mention Scott Hull's name on the cover. I can confirm that it has the glitch too; quite annoying.

Hello,

I own a copy of the CD from 1993. I guess it's a original mastered version.

I just ripped track 6 of it and checked it.
Cool Edit 2000 reported no clipped samples.

The replaygain values of the track are:
track_gain = -5.42 dB
track_peak = 0.999969

Sorry, Sebastian, for being faster.

Replaygain for lossless version of track 6:
replaygain_track_gain = -5.90 dB
replaygain_track_peak = 0.999969

Short sample including the glitch attached to the post.

Hello zZzZzZz,

I just downloaded the sample you provided, I can clearly hear a click at 2.748 sec.

Strange, Cool Edit reported no clipping in that sample either.

In the same track of my CD there is no such a click in the whole track.

In Peter's clip, it looks like the samples are clipped to [-32767, 32766], instead of using the full [-32768, 32767] available. Thus, CoolEdit won't see any samples at max, and doesn't think it's clipped.

I assume that the older version also does this, and therefore also won't report any clipping.

It's not clipping itself what causes the glitch, it looks more like an error in software/hardware that processed the sound at some point, wrapping high-negative samples into high-positive, as shown by the selection on the picture. There have been known cases of similar failures in commercial software (buggy ADPCM music decoders in certain PC game titles come to mind). The question is, how the hell did they manage to let this slip into a commercially released CD ?

poor quality control on the part of the mastering engineer. they are supposed to listen thoroughly before the CD is sent to pressing plants. the labels pay like $300 for a master disc, and that's on top of the mastering fee.

Here is a shot of one song from an album that I have issues with:

http://eve-l-head.no-ip.com/temp/cochise.png

(Note that this is but a very breif snapshot of this track. The majority of it is much the same.)

From Audioslave / Audioslave - Cochise.

The entire album is like this, so, from my perspective, it is one entire glitch. And for the record, this was a waste of money. There is no fixing this album.

Album was mastered by: Vlado Miller at Sony Music Studios, New York, NY.

Please do us a favor and retire.
