How Do You Burn 80 Min CD ?

I've been trying to burn a 79 min 21 sec cdr and can't do it either with burnatonce or Prassi Primo DVD. Prassi returns 'not enough free space' error & burnatonce states 'burning 800mb - free space 807mb' then returns various different errors. I am using an 80min/700mb disc.

79 min 21 sec = 800 mb.

If you can only burn up to 700Mb then how do you get 80 mins on an 80 min cdr ?

I would have asked this question in burnatonce's own forums, I joined today to do so but new members can't post for 7 days

Don't confuse the 80mins and 700MB figures, they refer to two completely different modes of writing and are not directly comparable.

The 80min figure is for audio CDs
The 700MB is for data CDs

As you say an 80min CD works out at a bit more than 800MB.
The difference is accounted for when you consider all the extra error coding that is included with a data CD.

Audio CDs are designed to play with a certain amount of lossy error correction applied in hardware.
The data CD must be 100% correct all the time.

As to why your burn fails, you're right at the limit and I would suspect the media you are using may not be quite up to it.
Can you burn 75 mins without trouble ??

Yes. It wrote 75 min 7 sec = 758Mb.

Burnatonce reported that the free space was 807Mb for audio, so you'd think it would be able to burn 800Mb

Burnatonce supports overburn, but writing 79 min 21 sec to an 80 min cdr shouldn't have required overburning.

Does your drive supports overburning? What drive do you have?

Anyway, 79 in a 80min CD is not overburning.

Try another burning software. Nero is stupid to set it up for overburning. Better Feurio, which has the best support for overburning, or one of those small free program like Burrrn...

Check the 'Overburning' checkmark in 'Device Options'.
AFAIK burning more than 74 minutes is considered overburning by cdrdao.

Seems to me like this might just be a case of a really old burner that doesn't support 80 min discs. What kind have you got?

I second that. About the best there is for audio CDs.

You can do a simulated capacity test that will tell you how much your particular drive and blank discs will actually write.

Feurio CD Writer > Extras > Test capacity of CD-R.

EAC also has a nice feature for testing capacities, but it's only reported as a time (like 81min 52s or so), no MB amount for data CDs.
I know that I know nothing. But how can I then know that ?

My Packard Bell pc is only two years old, the cdrw was included. I can't determine it's make, in device properties it says 'Standard CD-ROM drives' but it says 'standard' for all my drives including my Maxtor and Western Digital hard drives. It's label is IDE-CDR/RW 24x10A.

In Prassi Primo's disc explorer the disc capacity shows as 79:57 - 702.83Mb, it's a TDK d-view 80/700Mb.

I may try Feurio to see if it works but for the sake of 5 mins I don't fancy paying $29, I've paid for cd burners in the past & burnatonce is one of the best I've used and it's free.

Hm, you'd think a new-ish burner like that could handle them, my old "IDE-CDR/RW" 8x4x32 that first came in this computer certainly could... But it did have some other problems. The whole "unidentified drive" thing sets off a red flag for me at least.

Also, I'm not sure if you ever said exactly what you were trying to burn. The minutes specified would say audio, but hey, you might have some weird way of measuring that for data.

And if you aren't too hot on Feurio, you might try CD Speed from www.cdspeed2000.com. It will test burn a CDR out to it's maximum capacity, so you won't waste the disc.

I have no idea who could have manufactured that...
Most probably, Feurio won't support that drive officially (the demo of Feurio has no limitation in time or features).

What /\/ephaestous says sounds quite reasonable.

It seems related to the burning program, or the burning program not knowing how to work with that rare drive that you have.

Try the capacity test in EAC, Feurio or CDSpeed. Maybe you find something there.

Take the drive out of the pc and see if there is anything more descriptive on the labelling.

The capacity test with EAC gave the same results as Prassi Primo's disc explorer, 79:57 - 702.83Mb so it's probably not a bad disc as both app's are reporting the same info.

I was trying to burn an audio cd. Hence the confusion as 80 mins audio does not equate to 700Mb. I always wondered how you could get more audio on a disc than data, since explained by hujay.

I think I'll settle for 75 mins

I have burned several CDs with Feurio of 79:58 and even 79:59.
