Best 2.0 speakers for music/games?

I'm looking for a speaker system more ideally suited to frequent transportation between my dorm room and home, and not having to deal with a subwoofer would be a step in the right direction.  But I would like a system that sounds somewhat decent, if at all possible, for the sub-$30 price 2.0 systems usually go for.  Right now I have my eye on the Logitech X-120.  I tried Googling for reviews, but came up empty.  Anyone have any other recommendations, or does anyone have something to say about the Logitech?  Thanks.

Well how important is quality of sound to you?  I don't think those would be bad necessarily but then again I'm quite used to my Creative Itrigue 3300s now.  They're $80-$100 though and do have a subwoofer.  I haven't owned any Logitech speakers so I can't vouch for their quality (or lack of).

Sorry I couldn't be of much more help.  Try looking on newegg maybe and see if anything comes up

if you're willing to extend that budget just a little, you could find a great deal on pair of Klipsch Promedias 2.1 for under $50 on Ebay.  I actually, own the 4.1 system and I'm very happy with it so the 2.1 system would sound very good as well.
Of course, these are 2.1's and not 2.0 like you're looking for but I think you'll appreciate the extra bass that this system kicks out.

Try the Harman/JBL Duet 2.0 system, great quality for travel (although its shape makes it harder to cram into a bag). 60-20k frequency range, and much better quality than the Logitechs, MSRP $60 but Amazon and others have it for $30.

Also, if you can find a good deal, look for Sony's 2.0s at sonystyle.com, they're pricey but the sound quality is also good.

I find that the "2.0" "3.0" etc "computer speakers" are overpriced paperweights with horrible sound quality relative to other speakers. I went through about 4 sets of speakers in the 80$-220$ price range and ended up getting a Harman Kardon 5.1 receiver and some Harman Kardon bookshelf speakers off ebay for about 250$ total. I'd recommend (a) headphones (b) cheapest computer speakers you can find... the 30$-220$ range sucks... either go below or above depending on your budget...

I wouldn't necessarily say my Itrigues sound bad.  They're not overly expensive but the sound is at least decent.  Far better than any other computer speakers I've owned.  I wouldn't mine owning more expensive speakers but to be honest my equipment sounds just fine.

EDIT: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-116-120&depa=0

These are the Itrigues I own.  Not bad for the money.  Higher than what you asked for but still worth taking a look at all you can.

I'd suggest auditioning speakers like these or these or the Logitech's you mentioned at a local retailer.

If you can find them for less online, buy them there instead.

If you have $200 to spend on "2.0" computer speakers, there are actually some viable options these days

At $30 you're not going to find a whole lot of difference in quality, all are going to sound equally horrible.  And if you were going to shell out more I'd have to go with darrenalcorn on that one.  My advice is buy a set of headphones.

Be carefull how you use the word 'subwoofer'.  Marketing deparments have pretty much obliterated all meaning to that one.  Most computer speakers do not come with anything resembling a proper 'subwoofer'...especially if the driver is less than 8".  A decently cheap set of bookshelf speakers will put most of these 2.1, 3.1, 4.1 computer speakers to shame bass wise (and every other wise).

There is quite a bit of confusion about that term.  The proper term, wrt computer games and DVD movies and any other genre where the low frequency channel is referred to as "point one" is the "Low Frequency Effects" (LFE) channel.

LFE channels should not normally have any output at all, except when bombs are exploding, earthquakes are rattling, or elephants are stampeding.

A true audio subwoofer, on the other hand, is expected to be active all the time; a simple extenuation of the audio range to the lower end.

That's why "subwoofers" that come with speakers intended for computer gaming often sound awful when used for music playback.  They were never intended to have a smooth, integrated response, but rather to be loud and boomy.  And that's what they sound like with music -- loud and boomy.

Perhaps I shoud make my situation a bit clearer.  I live in a dorm room with a roomate for most of the year.  That means I'll be using headphones the vast majority of the time so as not to bug him.  (And I'm already saving up money for a good Sennheiser pair.)  But for those few occasions when he's at class and I want to listen to music or watch a DVD without anything on my head, a 2.0 system is perfectly adequate, so long as it sounds OK.  I never play music that loudly anyway--the walls are sort of thin, and sound travels far too well in the hallway--so actually, the better the subwoofer, the worse it is for my situation.  Additionally, if it's really big, it's just that much more inconvenient to transport.

I have heard the Klipsch 2.1's, and they do sound awesome--it's just that I wouldn't really be able to take advantage of that great sound anyway.

KM 2.1's are good if you are sticking with multimedia speakers, depending on your soundcard and external audio hardware (receiver, if any etc...) though you might look at getting a pair of studio reference/monitor speakers.  Sometimes you can pick up some gentry used ones on eBay or from studios/universities when they are upgrading.

A friend of mine recently bought a pair of the Bose Multimedia speakers. In the UK, they cost around £120, which is not cheap, but the sound output is nothing short of extraordinary for their size.

Too much mids, I find all the Bose speakers even the multimedia ones too tinny.

For 200$ you can pick up a 10yo Marantz amp and a pair of Mission 700 series speakers easy. Check any vintage hi-fi shops in town. For the same price you'll kick the butt of any pc-speakers so far they'll burn up in atmospheric re-entry.

Here I have the pc hooked up to the home cinema, but the concept is the same:
For price 'A' hi-fi 'B' kicks the butt of pc-speakers 'C'.

Is it just me, or are Creative speakers crap? They have good bass and mids, but somehow, I cannot hear the highs. Logitech and Terratec sound pretty good to my ears.

Does this mean that  *.1 systems are no good for music playback?
