Problems installing Kristal mp3 codec 4.2

I've been trying to install the Kristal Studios professional mp3 codec v4.2
included in the latest Nimo codec pack, but when I check my audio codecs in
Control Panel, it appears that I still have version 1.2.0.63, which I previously
installed with Kazaalite codec pack 2.20 full. On my previous PC I had no such
probs... Is Nimo failing to register the codec or sth? Is there a way around this?

Plus, I've noticed that when I check the properties of a codec with mmc.exe
and afterwards close the properties window, 4 of my audio codecs (out of a total
of 14) disappear... If I check again later, they show up again. What the fudge is
this all about?

The only advice I can give is not to use any kind of codec packs. Especially Nimo's is known to fuck up systems pretty badly and I personally don't see the point of installing an amateurish package of outdated codecs/filters.

Well, I agree that many codec packs suck, e.g. Nimo screwed up my system
first time I installed it, but I only want the mp3 codec, as it seems to be the
best version of l3codecp.acm (as discussed elsewhere in HA).
The kazaalite pack is actually pretty decent...
