Can a flac file be cut :)

This topic was inspired by the other topic "can a mpc file be cut"

It's lossless: Decode it, cut it using <insertfavaudioeditorhere>, and encode it again. If you are using CoolEditPro/Audition you can use Case's FLAC cool edit filter and even save the additional en/decoding step.

i dont think that can be done when the decoded wav file is over 2g  !

Then how do you encode the FLAC if you can't store source WAV correctly ?
Seriously, since biggest WAV files most of people can possibly get are limited by the size of an audio CD, I don't see much demand for FLAC cutter app. Creating new non-size-limited PCM container format sounds like less headache to do.

I normally get very large flac files by encoding directly to flac using foobar2000 with case's recorder direct from radio, cassette or lp.  I encode to flac because I don't want the quality to get any worse!

You can hand-edit .cue or .apl file to point to a part of a FLAC file, then use foobar2000 diskwriter to create a new FLAC from it.

thats what I said in the mpc cut thread, but I was hoping for a slightly easier way of getting the cut points

Generic foobar2000 audio cutter/transcoder component could do that.
Too bad I don't feel like making it.

I agree with you in that point, JEN.

A component to set cuepoints in tracks and the functionality to export them as cuesheet or split the input file using the cuepoints would be really nice if somebody would write it.

edit:
addendum: That feature would also enable the functionality of A-B repeat in tracks and cutting part of tracks for ABX'ing.

Could be very useful feature indeed for me too. Well, now that the idea is out, I think it will be only a matter of time until it appears, I hope.
I hope Peter would consider again, but if not, hopefully someone will.. Ermm Case? :B

I havent tested it yet, but FLAC files should be editable when being muxed with a fake video stream into a MKV on DirectShow, and then edited in VirtualdubMod  ....

shntool is a command line utility which works with flac, ape, wavepac, shorten, optifrog, and others.  It can split any of these formats using its split mode.  The output files can also be any of the regcognized formats.

I have written a command line utility which will read toc/cue files and output the track breakpoints in a format useable by shntool.

% cuebreakpoints (cuefile.toc or tocfile.toc) | shntool split audiofile

will split the audiofile into tracks based on the cuefile/tocfile.

cuebreakpoints (which is not yet well tested) is available at the cuetools website.

Thanks for advice. At the moment I handle it another way.

I transcode my original (lossless) recordings to mp3 using a fast mp3 encoder (Gogo).

Load the mp3 file in mp3DirectCut just to get the cue-points.
Listen track und manually set cuepoints.
Save the cuesheet and edit the text to link it to the original file. Delete mp3 file.
Play the seperate tracks using the cuesheet in fb2k.

But I can consider this only as a temporary solution. It would be really great to set the cuepoints in foobar itself because mp3DirectCut is limited to mp3 only.
