Alternatives to CoolEdit

I am looking to replace coolEdit, cannot aford the latest version. My alternatives are :

(1) Goldwave,

(2) Sound Forge Studio 6

(3) Nero 6 with wave editing capability

I have not used any of the above tools only CoolEdit. I wood like to be able to do the same kind of things that i can do with cooledit.

Any suggestions, or if you know of any other tools then let me know.

thanks, but i do not want to spend  any more than £200 for say 5 licences.

That piece of art is not directly in the same price-range as the above. He said Audition is too expensive.

I'd suggest Goldwave or Audacity (freeware, needs some more work to be "complete", though).

I prefer GoldWave 4.2 as it's the only audio editing app I know of that allows you to set markers with both the right and left mouse buttons.

All others I've tried (including GoldWave 5) use the annoying click and drag method.

Just wondering...what does the chosen model (open source) for the development of the program have to do with the way is being offered (freeware)? Aren't those two different issues? Isn't Audacity free?

I believe that's just a mix of semantics and nitpicking.

i would have to say go with soundforge studio. while it is quite stripped down from the original soundforge, for $70 you get a decent editing suite.

nero doesn't have a good wave editor and features and goldwave is too amateurish.

it all pretty much depends on what you want to do with it. what version of cool edit are you looking to replace? pro and 2000 are very different programs.

audacity is free to use, and free to modifiy ... a freeware app is only free to use, and most of the times, for personal use only ...

andyrob:  still haven't told us what version of cool edit you're trying to change from.  Frankly, I'd suggest you upgrade to Adobe Audition if you're working with CEP 1.x, and if you're working with any 2.x version the upgrade is free.  If you're using CE2k, you may be in for a larger upgrade cost but still much much better than buying new software.  Just go to Adobe's website and scrounge around a little, you'll find the links.

I saw that Goldwave was recommended. Personally I have some doubts about the sound quality of some of the features. I remember trying out a 48->44.1 downsampling and comparing it to SSRC, and the difference was quite big. And I don't have very good hearing, I might add. Nevertheless, its quite nice if your just into plain cut and paste editing.

I would vote Sony SoundForge 7.0
There is fixed some bugs from SoundForge 6.0 and there is some new tiny features also. It has OGG and WMA 9 support also.

If I understand correctly, you already use CoolEdit and want something that can do the same. Why don't you just keep using the version you have?

If you need additional features of latest CoolEdit/Adobe Audition you can still get 1 licence for a little bit more than £200.

I am daily user of version 6 and about to upgrade to 7 but seeing this

would  suggest that the retail price of $499 directly before any kind of discount or smart shopping would likely rule that out.

thanks for suggestions, i will look more at soundforge and goldwave

our original version of cooledit was for one user licence only. the version we have is cooledit 2000 and cannot be bought anymore, only the new adobe edition of Cool Edit is available which is more expensive. we now need at least 5 licences so the cost would be too much.

The max we can spend roughly £250 fo all 5 licences

Hmm ... I would try to get a multi-user license for a "second-hand" cool edit (Cool Edit 2000 or Cool Edit Pro) through EBay first (maybe you can get them for a convenient price), if I would want to stay with it ... problem is missing official future support, though ...

SoundForge 6 is my favourite wav editor (and will stay for a long time) but development on the Audacity project will be of great future interest for me ...

OGG support is a real word ... but with an OGG direct show filter installed, any other DX capable application will neither show problems with ogg files.

WMA 9 editing is of no interest for me (even most portables only support WMA8) at this time but a variety of supported formats is always a nice feature ...

BTW ... I've been extensively using SoundForge 6.0d for a long time and did not encounter any serious (or even annoying) bugs yet ... which bugs are you referring to ?

They only won't support WMA9 Pro and lossless.

I would vote Sony SoundForge 7.0 too
MPC: --quality 10 --xlevel (v. 1.15s) (archive/transcoding)
MP3:  LAME 3.96.1 --preset standard (daily listening/portable)

They only won't support WMA9 Pro and lossless.

The I just wonder why my Creative Jukebox 3 refuses to play lossy WMA9 files (standard, not pro IIRC) even with the actual firmware ...  ... maybe I should check this again ...
