Updating from older Portable Foobar 2000

Hello!

I have a pretty old Foobar2k portable version 1.6.16 and I would like to get it updated. I noticed there is no longer a portable download available. When I attempt to place the fb2k portable dir into my program files (x86) and run the newest foobar (32-bit) installer it will not work since it's the portable version that I have.

Any ideas how I can update it while keeping all the hard work I've done on my Foobar over the past 20 years?

I'm using Windows 11 Pro, 22H2, OS Build 22621.2283.

Error message:
The install directory 'C:\Program Files (x86)\foobar2000' contains configuration data, but foodbar2000 is not using portable mode. This is no longer supported since foobar2000 v2.0.

Thanks!
Di

Also, when I'm trying to add a component it's giving me the error "Cannot access configuration folder: Access denied" with my portable exe.

There is always a portable version available.  When you download the installer, it offers to do a Portable install to a folder of your choice when it is run.

Version 1.6.16 is the last "only" 32-bit Foobar, before the "version 2" series offered either a 32-bit or 64-bit version.

You shouldn't try to install a Portable version into a Windows "permissions" folder like anything in C:\Program Files.  Put it into a folder like C:\Foobar2000.

The version 2 series uses a folder structure that may be different from your existing 1.6.16 depending on what kinds of overwites etc. you have done over the years during upgrading the version 1 series.

The best option is to install the latest version of Foobar from scratch and re-do your theme and options, but it has a mechanism for updating on top of 1.6.16 and attempting to maintain as many settings as possible, which you can try first.  Back up your existing install at any rate.  There have been several other posts on this subject you should search.

Hi Sveakul,

Thanks so much for explaining all that even though there is lots to search from. Yea looks like I had the portable folder in the Program Files (x86) so moving it to the C: dir let the installer give me the choice of Portable upgrade. Seemed to have worked fine except one old component that was not needed anymore.

And for the component I wanted to add I just went into the Component settings page and clicked install and found the .component file.

Thanks again!
