Windows FLAC tagger with GUI and CDDB support?

Hi folks,

I'm new to FLAC and really like it, but I can't find a good tagging GUI for WinXP.  I used to use Helium for mp3 which was quite versatile.  Anything like that with FLAC support?  In particular, I'd like to snag CDDB entries for an album, perhaps adjust them a bit, then update the tags.

I looked at EasyTag, but can't find a Windows version.  I tried the Tag_Frontend, but couldn't figure out CDDB support.  Any tips?

Thanks

Geez, it's been over a year and there is still no FLAC tagger with GUI and CDDB support.

Personally, I just wasted half a morning tagging a bunch of FLAC files (or so I thought) with Tagscan only to find out that although it will happily read and display FLAC tags, it silently discards any request to write the tags!!

What is up with that?

Any suggestions for a GUI tagger for FLAC?

[/li][li]Tag&Rename I love the AMG support and it's always been solid for me, It's 30 day shareware
If using Tag&Rename I'd use the 3.1 Beta 3 as it is capable of writing Vorbis comments (FLAC's native tagging scheme).
Tag&Rename 3.0 series is only capable of writing ID3v1 & ID3v2 to FLAC.[/li][li]The GodFather by jtclipper. It also uses freedb.org & allmusic.com. TGF from the little bit I've used it, appears to be a pretty good application. Definitely robust with its numerous features such as AMG import in TGF's price range  is a nice plus. The GodFather is free.[/li][/list] [span style='font-size:9pt;line-height:100%'](I've not spoken with jtclipper but from what I've seen he seems to be interested in helping users)[/span]

[/li][li]Mp3tag - the universal Tag Editor uses freedb. I've found Mp3tag to be a powerful program & the author Florian is very active with development and listens to requests, answers questions. Also free.[/li][li]MP3 Book Helper Perhaps MP3 Book Helper isn't as polished as the others but it has a great number of features. open source-free[/li][/list] [span style='font-size:9pt;line-height:100%'](Also a nice person, from speaking with him)[/span]

(side note: both support tagging from txt and/or csv)

A different type of service is MusicBrainzMusicBrainz Tagger uses TRM Acoustic Fingerprint Technology. Which has provided me with successful results in terms of its automated accuracy as well as grammar, spelling etc. I've certainly found it to be superior to freedb. Again, open source-free.

Putting this together ended up taking a lot longer then I was expecting.
As far as foobar2000, I'll leave that to a foo_master to enlighten you on what it is capable of.

Hope this is of some help, tec

      Thanks for all the replies.

      @Tec9SD: I downloaded Tag&Rename and I like it a lot.  I hope it's cheap. :-)

I must own up to something about TagScanner.  The share I was running TagScanner against was a read-only share.  That's why it wouldn't save the tags.  I still think that it should have warned me, though, instead of letting me waste two hours.

Also, the Tag&Rename UI is much quicker handling than TagScanner.

I don't exactly have an answer to your question, but I have some information that might help you.

The series of products available at www.collectorz.com (most specifically Music Collector and MP3 Collector) use Gracenote.  And Tag&Rename (www.softpointer.com) can write flac (actually vorbis) tags to flac files.

Now if you could just figure out how to export the data from Music Collector and import it into Tag&Rename....

So few apps use Gracenote (CDDB2) compared with freedb, because of the strict restrictions Gracenote applies to licensing access.

Winamp uses Gracenote, may be you can find a way of using it as an alt.?
I am really not aware of anything, sorry.

      Best wishes, tec

Importing is a feature I'm desperately missing in Tag&Rename, though compared to when I 1st began using it, at least now you can copy tags and so on.
I seem to recall reading somewhere that importing of data would be added at some point, I'm not positive about this though. You can email the author with the request though. :-D

Try MP3Bookhelper, it will import tags from XML and CSV files.

      Take care, tec

I just bought Tag & Rename.  I'm using it on FLAC and MP3 files.  FreeDB and Allmusic support is "good enough" for me.  In fact, I do not find CDDB to be any better.  They all have their own share of errors in CD naming.

I agree about the last comment about Tag & Rename.  It really, really needs an import feature.  What I do to get around this is use Excel to make a batch file which will rename the files and include the various tags in the long file name.  Then I use Tag & Rename get tags from file name.  Very hacked way of doing it but it's better than doing hundreds of files by hand.

I've also ended up using Godfather to clear some tags that Tag&Rename would not clear / didn't know about.  The "clear all but necessary tags" feature is very, very handy.

If you're using Excel in order to get access to VBA to write your script files, you might try writing your scripts directly for Windows Script Host.  (As a full-time programmer this option is very attractive to me -- if you, on the other hand, are a full-time spreadsheet jockey, then it may not be so attractive to you.)

Tell me your thoughts about T&R vs The Godfather (TGF).  I've been using T&R for a couple of weeks and just fired up TGF.  I especially like TGF's ability to standardize the case of tags and filenames.

I have not really given The Godfather a lot of time so any comparison to Tag & Rename is not fair coming from me at this point.

Out of all the tagger's I've used, Tag & Rename's GUI was the easiest / quickest for me to learn.  It is still somewhat clunky and the process for selecting / deselecting files should be easier.  For example, select a bunch with mouse OR down-arrow / page down, then hit spacebar to select.  Hit space bar to deselect.  This is the way Xnews works on articles.  But Tag & Rename uses somewhat difficult to remember or hit control-key combos.  Still, I can find my way around Tag & Rename.

I didn't give TGF much use simply because it's user interface seemed to require more learning.  The thing that gets me about ALL of the taggers is that you have to dig a few more layers down into the GUI to get at certain tags.  If this is repetitive, it gets to be tiring.  There are some tags Tag & Rename simply does not give access too, but the Godfather does, such as the extra comment tags in FLAC / Vorbis comments.  The Godfather would show some, but not all.  Thankfully, it would remove those that I wanted removed even if it would not let me edit them.

As far as speed goes, I'd say they are about the same, but I'd have to do more testing.  I've tested removing ID3V1 on 1000 files in Tag & Rename and it did not too bad.

So , again, now that a few months have passed:  is there yet a WIndows FLAC tagger with Gracenote CDDB support? That is, a tagger that lets you load an album's worth of FLAC files from your library into a GUI, and tag them using calls to CDDB (not Freedb).

Also, I saw mention on this thread that Tag&Rename supports allmusic.com queries for tagging, but the version I bought earlier this month  (v.3.1.6) apparently only offers querying to amazon.com and freedb.  Am I missing something?

Do any of these taggers support entire album flac files?  It seems that they are oriented toward tagging individual track files.

I'm also interested in knowing whether any support external flac cue sheets.  I know foobar2000 has a plug in for this.  I think it stores the metadata that would normally be maintained in its DB in the external cue sheet as REM comments.

I've found several cases where Gracenote has info (or more accurate info)  where freedb does not, especially for classical music.  That's why I'd like to find something like T&R's post-ripping freedb tagging tool, using Gracenote instead (for flac files). This appears to be a tall order.

Have you tried the other tag frontend "Tagger"?  There is a link to it from speeks frontend for it.  It's at [a href="http://www.tagger.de.vu/]http://www.tagger.de.vu/[/url].  I use it, no cddb, uses freedb which is generally better from my experience.  Also foobar2000 has excellent freedb support, and can of course tag flacs amoung other things.

      Hi,

I would like to auto-tag my flac files using the preferred Gracenote CDDB - for classical - (not freedb) after the complete tracks have been previously extracted to the harddrive yet without track titles.

At first, I tried the Quintessential Player 4.51 (QCD) software, but when I downloaded a hard-to-find 3rd party flag pluggin that is supposedly specifically designed for placement in the QCD program plugin file folder, it still failed to acknowledge flac files as valid/viable/existent audio files.

Then I tried out Winamp 5.541 and figured out (correct me if I'm wrong - especially for the sake of those reading this) that Winamp is not currently capable of applying its Easy-Tagger feature for flac files.

I'd like to know why the aforementioned scenario regarding QCD didn't work out; I placed the flac plugin into the "plugins" sub-folder.  Does anyone know what I should do, if anything, to render a solution?

      Thanks!
