Server change for Hydrogenaudio IRC channel
The #hydrogenaudio channel (chatroom) moved to the server "irc.freenode.net".

To chat in the new channel, click the "Chat" link on the navbar or download an IRC client such as mIRC and add the IRC server "irc.freenode.net" (don't include the ""), port 6667. Then type /join #hydrogenaudio and you're ready to chat with us.

It's worth mentioning, for anyone interested, that #foobar2000 also moved to the same network (freenode)

While I like freenode.  IMHO, I think it would benefit us all if I officially invite both the HA and the foobar IRC channels to the CoreCodec IRC Server.  I am sure that both Blacksun and Christian would agree. What do you all think? JohnV, rjamorim? LMK

Well.. it's the same to me, but seems that Peter (the foobar dev) wasn't so enthusiastic after checking the corecodec server for some reason (not related to stability, but the way services work, use of email and channel description and such), and wanted to move #foobar2000 to freenode. And since it will not happen that #hydrogenaudio and #foobar2000 remain in different servers, we are both now at freenode.

JohnV... no problem... but I really believe that a community focus is most important... and to have freenode while 'good' does not really facilitate focus like what is offered.

The offer still stands for the future...

It's been out of order for 2 years or so, which is exactly how old the posts you are replying to are.

The chat works. The link in the navbar (which used to fire up some Java IRC client) not.

I registered my nick there a while back (lextune  ) and after a reformat I lost the app data in my client (which was remembering the password)

So.....Anybody know of a way I can retrieve, or reset my nick password?

#ha is pretty dead; most of the chat goes on in #foobar2000, but that's often quiet too...

Globally, IRC has been dying since 2004 (http://irc.netsplit.de/networks/top10.php?year=2004) so i wouldn't be surprised if they continue the trend.

It is official; Netcraft confirms: IRC is dying

One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleaguered IRC community when IDC confirmed that IRC market share has dropped yet again, now down to less than a fraction of 1 percent of all IM protocols. Coming on the heels of a recent Netcraft survey which plainly states that IRC has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. IRC is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by deathward incline of this graph on Netsplit.de comprehensive statistics page.

You don't need to be an IT guru to predict IRC's future. The hand writing is on the wall: IRC faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for IRC because IRC is dying. Things are looking very bad for IRC. As many of us are already aware, IRC continues to lose market share. Red ink flows like a river of blood.

QuakeNet is the most endangered of them all, having lost 93% of its core operators. The sudden and unpleasant departures of long time QuakeNet ops ~kiddo~ and d0n4t3plz only serve to underscore the point more clearly. There can no longer be any doubt: IRC is dying.

Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.

Freenode operator christel states that there are 30000 users of freenode. How many users of Rizon are there? Let's see. The number of Freenode versus Rizon links on the Internet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 30000/5 = 6000 Rizon users. UniBG links on the Internet are about half of the volume of Rizon posts. Therefore there are about 3000 users of UniBG. A recent article put QuakeNet at about 80 percent of the IRC market. Therefore there are (30000+6000+3000)*4 = 156000 QuakeNet users. This is consistent with the number of QuakeNet links.

Due to the troubles of netsplits and abysmal female users percentage, QuakeNet went out of business and was taken over by DALnet who runs another troubled network. Now DALnet is also dead, its corpse turned over to yet another charnel house.

All major surveys show that IRC has steadily declined in market share. IRC is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If IRC is to survive at all it will be among IM dilettante dabblers. IRC continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, IRC is dead.

Fact: IRC is dying

I really rather over-state things when I say that #foobar2000 is dead. It's actually pretty active these days. When you consider the fact that a lot of IRC happens in invite-only and private channels, perhaps things are not as they appear publicly as well...

I know the post I'm replying to is 5 years old, but for future reference, Freenode can be accessed over SSL on ports 6697, 7000 and 7070.

Not that it's important but while ago I created #foobar2000-it (on freenode) for the Italian discussions.
