Tag&Rename: How to batch rename File Name?

1. I own a Sansa Clip+. I find it a wonderful and indispensable item of digital technology. It is extremely durable. Yea, Sansa!
2. I discovered an awesome collection of Old Time Radio (.mp3) programs at https://archive.org/details/oldtimeradio .
3. I've downloaded many detective and mystery radio programs in .zip files from the site.
4. When extracted, many of the .mp3 file fields are either empty or do not work well with the Sansa Clip+. For the most part, I've easily and successfully converted or filled-in the fields with Tag&Rename, primarily changing the genre from "Music" to "Podcast." My Sansa Clip+ recognizes the genre and drops the .mp3s into the Podcast folder.
5. I am not "code" literate, "variables" literate or "File name mask" literate. I have about 30 "Barry Craig" .mp3 files for which I need to shorten the file names. The search string is too long. Can Tag&Rename do a batch file name change? If so, how do I go about setting up the batch renaming?

[blockquote]As a an example, I want to change the following

from:
Barry Craig Barry Craig 1951-1952 11 Death of a Private Eye Podcasts.mp3
Barry Craig Barry Craig 1951-1952 12 Murder Island Podcasts.mp3

to:
1951-1952 11 Death of a Private Eye Podcasts.mp3
1951-1952 12 Murder Island Podcasts.mp3[/blockquote]
by eliminating "Barry Craig Barry Craig " (and the trailing space), but keep the individual program titles.
So, how do I do that?

7. And, finally, if T&R can’t do the batch rename, is there a user-friendly program that can?

Thank you for any assistance you might be able to provide.

Mp3tag can do a lot with that with "convert/Tag - Filename" and possibly some of the other convert options
http://www.mp3tag.de/en/

Everything you intend to work on in the batch must first be in one folder (not mixed with files not to be changed) and they probably need to be numbered first (Tools/Auto numbering wizard). You will have to read the help and come to grips with the program's variables in order to know what to put where but that isn't terribly esoteric.

AndyH-ha,

Thank you for responding.

I'm challenged by the variables and substitutions. I'm hoping someone in the forum is familiar with writing the string or file nme mask that will modify the file names.

I could do it by re-writing each file name individually, but a batch edit would be so much easier. I think I can logic out file name changes for future downloads , once I see a string or mask written for this set. I don't even know what a "file name mask" means.

I'm computer-search savvy, but even search terms to find a solution are not forthcoming.

Manually renaming 30 tracks is a matter of several minutes :-)

Tag & Rename names the files based on information in the file's tags.

So, if you wanted to rename your files to something like Artist - Title.mp3, you would use the mask %1 - %2

using foobar2000, you can add files to a playlist, right click>file operations>rename to>...

enter this as the pattern

Code: [Select]
$replace(%filename%,Barry Craig ,)

I want to recommend TagScanner  Can even be used for batch rename folders etc. based on tags.

I realize that. I could have keyboarded the renaming in far, far, far less time than structuring the question.

However, that is not the only collection I have in which long file names are problematic. I'm hoping to understand, even as a newbie, a little bit about batch string truncation and file name masking, if it is possible. If it is possible, I can apply the process to other files and maybe help someone else down the line.

Thank you for your response.

Hi Marc2003,

I read your response last night, didn't quite understand. I read it again today and it makes perfect sense! I'll download foobar2000 over the weekend and get back to you.

Thank you!

Bulk Rename Utility would be the EASIEST and fastest way to do what you described, above.

MP3Tag is a fantastic utility. There is a dedicated forum that will provide you all the support you could ever want. Definitely worth adding to the tool chest.
