Why not foobar2004 ?

I don't know the real reason why this player is named foobar2000, but I think that a new name would be nice. What about foobar2004 ?

And foobar2005 next year?
No, really I prefer the current name. It is already well known out there!

It's named foobar2000 because it's just so über-cool name and makes the program modern and leet. Think of it: 1) no name with 2000 in the end can be bad 2) no product with a cool name (one with 2000 in the end) can be bad. foobar2004 would be so lame.

Best thing MS ever made.  I still remember being amazed the first time a game crashed in 2000 without killing the entire computer . . .

A few days before 2000 IIRC, most people didn't get the actual disks until January or feb.

foobar2000 is the name of the program. 2000 doesn't indicate a version number like it does with windows 95,98, 2000. There for it will not be changed.

It name is a parody on program names.

This last post reminded me that the 95 in win95 is number of times it crashes in a week.

So the 2000 in foobar2000 can be the number of things you can do with it.

Windows Server 2003 is actually the best thing MS has ever made. Then comes Windows 2000 and only after that comes XP. Who knows what Codename Longhorn is going to be. Let's hope it's the best  The new Slate theme in Codename Longhorn is just plain ugly. It'll be the first thing I'll turn off when I get my hands on it.
