Album list view: Don’t brake albums into album parts per artist

When choosing the Album view, foobar2000 Mobile does what many other apps do: If one album has titles with different values in the artist field, the album isn’t listed once, but once per artist, each containing only that artists titles. This is just wrong, isn’t it? How can I change that?

foobar2000 (not Mobile) can be configured to sort the list using more or less any structure of tags (sort by album first, then by artist, then by title, if album equals this than do that, ignore "the" and so on). Can that be done in foobar2000 Mobile, too?

This is what the Albumartist tag is for. This should be consistent for every track on each album and will keep them from breaking up due to different individual track artists.

I don’t think an album should be split up when the artist tag is not consistent, as long as the album tag is. The same value in the album tag means it is the same album. One, not many. Symphony handles it that way.

If only the Album tag is used, how would you differentiate anything titled "Greatest Hits" by any number of Artists. Or even less common ones like "Faith" by Faith Hill or George Michael. It is the combination of AlbumArtist and Album that creates a unique combination that helps music apps keep an Album together, regardless of the individual Title Artist.

Fair point. I didn’t think of that. Looks like in over 300 albums I don’t have that even once.

But: What should an app do, if there is no albumartist tag? I find the app falling back to the artist tag inconvenient. Maybe Symphony uses the path instead.

It would be nice to be able to use title formatting for sorting the list. I don’t know if that can be implemented in an Android app, though.

I think the ethos behind the current functionality is that the program shouldn't compensate for missing or broken tags. It should only help the user correct them if they need it, which at least foobar on desktop excels at. (Oof, I don't know if I could fix tags on mobile...)
