Why is the DEFAULT character encoding in XLD "Mac OS Roman"?

Just wondering, why an earth, the DEFAULT character encoding in XLD is "Mac OS Roman"?
 >:(
A month ago I started ripping some cd's after a very long break in that.
I noticed a new version of XLD.
I decided to install it this time to Applications, previous version was in Utilities.
And then deleted the old version.

I guess this trashed my settings.

I have now ripped two dosens of cd's that I no longer have access to and noticed this character encoding.
Is there an app for correcting the names to UTF-8?
Wrong encoding will cause problems in the future, especially when I have forgot the whole thing...
