[TOS #8] Most "audiophiles" never heard high-end music?

I've noticed that most posters on online forums who seem to identify as "audiophiles" have low-cost, low-end equipment chains. Additionally, almost all of them listen exclusively to headphones. The headphones they often cite are ancient mid-fi products like the HD600, typically plugged into God-awful amps and DACs. It seems clear that with equipment like that, they've never heard high-end audio.

What does the community think the minimal criteria for identification with the "audiophile" group should be?

I am glad to have seen many helpfull abx efforts of people using their HD-600 against so much pointless fluff of deaf placebophiles using their boutique crap.
Edit: Just think about the Philips Golden Ear Challenge that several people i know took pretty well with their average headphones while for many members in audiophile forums i did read several excuses. To many knobs, you know.

With 24bit music you can listen to silence much louder!

I've recently had the opportunity to discuss (by mail) with a engeneer of a well know loudspeaker manufactuer located in the Denmark.
I've redesigned completely my loudpeakers and the improvements are great... it is sometimes sympathetic to discuss with experimented specialists that have a vast technical superiority on you.
It also can be harmful for the youngs or those that are taking their passion too seriously when they are categorized as low end guys  :))

Denmark is home to some very high end and expensive audio manufacturers. Something tells me your speakers cost more than $500. A single RAAL tweeter costs hundreds, for example.

But someone plugging a $200 headphone into a $100 DAC is not going to get anything but entry-level mid-fi at very best. Compressed dynamics, lack of micro-detail retrieval, flat soundstage, lack of air/burnish, poor dimentionality, slow attack, etc.
