dBpowerAMP: Inaccurate confidence 1 meaning + what to do? Option help?

Hi,

I'm using dbPoweramp to rip my music, but I haven't been doing it that long and I'm not really sure what to do when errors occur. Luckily, I seem to get very few errors . Could someone please tell me if I'm understanding this correctly?

I assume it means that it read it okay but that the rip does not match the one already in the AccurateRip database. Is that correct? Does confidence 1 mean one rip in the database or is it a scale of 1 to 10 (or something like that)? What does the .IGNORE mean? Is this the result of some parameter I have set/not set correctly?

What am I meant to do when I get this error? Also, what should I do if I get an error saying it is not secure? Does this mean I have a bad disc, a bad drive, or that I should just try and clean the disc or something? BTW, the disc is brand new. I assume my drive is okay as I have received so few errors but are some drives better than others? Is it worth buying a particular drive for ripping?

Could someone also tell me what dbpoweramp parameter settings they recommend when ripping. At the moment I'm ripping to both FLAC and WAV (not sure why but disk space is cheap so it seemed safer to rip to WAV as well in case I buy a player that can't play FLAC). I then sort out any tag errors using MP3TAG and convert the resultant FLAC files to MP3 for my portable media players. I'm not sure if I should be converting the FLAC files to an Apple lossless format for my iPod Classic but I use the MP3's for a smaller Sony player. Anyone got any views on the merits of sound quality/size of MP3 192k verus Apple lossless?

There are so many parameters in dbpoweramp and most of them go over my head so any advice would be greatly appeciated. I'm thinking in terms of the DSP Effects in particular. What replaygain settings do people recommend and why? I assume that replaygain just sets a flag in the ripped files rather than changing the actual volume. Is this correct? I'm totally lost as to the difference between track versus album replaygain. Which should I be using?

Sorry if these questions are very basic or have been asked before. Please feel free to refer me to stuff to read, or other posts, but any help would be most welcome. I'm afraid that much of the stuff I have read is too technical for me to understand.

Seems a little pointless ripping to both Flac and Wav since all you need to do is decode the Flac and you automatically get the Wav you originally ripped.
Who are you and how did you get in here ?

With a confidence of 1 you cannot be sure if it is your rip, or the other guys rip which has the error. Instead the cd drive is used to determine if the results are secure, such reliance on the drive to self report accuracy is not 100%

Everything you are considering is OK!  Since you are going to keep a  tagged-lossless "master archive", you can't really make a bad decision.  i.e. If you decide to change from FLAC to ALAC, AC3 or MP3 for your iPod, you won't have to re-rip.  (I agree with A_Man_Eating_Duck.  You don't need WAV files which are larger than FLAC/ALAC and don't easily support tags.)

On most tracks, you won't hear a difference (in a blind test) between a high-quality MP3 (or AAC, etc.) and lossless. 

Here are the Recommended LAME MP3 settings[/u].  With MP3 (or other lossless formats) it's best to use variable bit rate, rather than something like "192kbps".  Unless you need a particular constant (or exact-average) bitrate, you don't choose the bitrate, you choose a quality setting and allow the encoder to adjust the bitrate moment-to-monent.  (And, Joint Stereo is always recommended.)

Thanks for all the replies.

I've just ripped a CD and I'm not sure what I should do about the errors (see below). As it says the rip is insecure, do I need to return the CD, clean it somehow (if so how?), or is it because it is an old recording? I've no idea when the CD was actually pressed. I assume it is not an error with my drive as all other rips are working fine. Is that correct?

How should I interpret the "Inaccurate confidence 5". Does it mean that rip is inaccurate but that 5 other people also have the same inaccurate result? When AccurateRIP reports on a rip being inaccurate does it mean that the track is different to the track in the database or does it take into account the actual CD the track is on? This is an old Elvis CD and many of the tracks were recorded a number of times, so does AccurateRIP take that into account, or does it just compare the track with the track in the database?

When all goes well ripping is so easy with dbPoweramp but I'm totally lost as to what to do when errors occur.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
