Batch converting collection to ID3 v2 - safe ?

Hi

I am currently editing my collection in Nokia's Player (to embed album art) to upload to my 5800 XPress Music phone, but this software appears to read the v1 ID3 if present, giving me the >30 character limitation.

So I was thinking of possibly converting all my files to v2 only, using FB2K (after testing that the Nokia Player will read these - I'm assuming it will as lets me edit the truncated fields with longer entries).

Are there potential disadvantages to this ? I guess any soft/hardware that reads v1 only wouldn't be able to read the metadata correctly if only v2 present ?

Is converting back to including both v1 & v2 as straightforward ?

thanks

IMO that player is very slow, but it seems as only/easy way to use album art on Nokia

You should go for both ID3v1 and ID3v2, or maybe just ID3v1 if you mean to use files only on your phone, as ID3v2 are unreadable by Nokia

Really ? Unbelievable in 2010 ... or maybe not with Nokia (I'm new to them).

You're right about the player - only using it as reliable way to get album art into tracks. Wouldn't dream of using it otherwise.

The sync'ing is crap as well. What I'm doing is making sure album art correct in Ovi/Nokia Player, editing tags back to correct v2 data. Then just connecting phone as mass storage device & pasting them over. Seems to work, just pretty clumsy (although fortunately Ovi Player allows batch file editing of fields in multiple files ie. album, genre etc.

Bit weird though, as it allows me to edit tag data to longer, correct tag - so it must allow >30 characters, but doesn't read the v2 tag when importing the file !?

OK - I'll leave as is (tagged with v1 & v2).
