EAC Rippling Slowly

I had been using EAC v0.95 prebeta 5 ripping at around 10x speed for a few years now

I recently downloaded EAC v0.99 prebeta4.  I let EAC detect my drive features and then I did a rip.  I was impressed that it was ripping at about 30x.  I was thrilled.  Accurate rip said it was accurate.  I was thrilled.

My next rip of the same CD it was back down to around 10x.  The next CD was at about the same speed.  I did not change any EAC settings in between.  I even rebooted once and that had no impact.

Any ideas why I would only get this 30x speed once?

I don't have any ideas off the top of my head but I can tell you that absolutely nothing has changed between V0.95pb5 and V0.99pb4 that would cause this.

I'm guessing I had it in burst mode for my first rip but I didn't realize it.  I get about 30x in burst mode.

On the bright side of this, by searching the forums I found that burst mode with accuraterip is sufficient for a new CD.

Depending on your drive, the drive may have dropped the speed down.  I have run into this with my Plextor drives.  Sometimes I'll be ripping a stack of CDs and hit a disc that drops to 8X rip.  Then every disc I put in afterward will do the same thing.  I found that if I bring up PlexTools and change the read speed there, it will overcome this.  If figured this over a long time of ripping 100's of discs from my collection.

Another alternative is if the drive is connected via USB, you can power cycle the drive if you suspect it has gotten stuck in a slow state.

Something else I've discovered with my Plextor is it will change from DMA to PIO on its own.  This has happened twice over a period of 4 years and I have no idea why.  It may be a function of Windows XP - not sure.  Again, bringing up Plextools was the solution.  Running in PIO mode will certainly slow down rips too.

I remember some earlier threads that dealt with this.

Excellent!

It turns out that one of my drives had dropped into PIO mode.  I did the microsoft fixes and now it is ripping fast.  I still think I had set it to burst mode at one point, but now my non-burst is faster as well.

Thanks for the info.
