Playing FLAC on XBOX 360?

I have a copy of Metallica's "Black Album" that's been rematsered in 5.1 that plays great on my PC through several applications, but I want to play it on my XBOX, which is on our home network.

Knowing that the XBOX can only play what's in the WMP library, I searched the forums and found a way to add FLAC files to the library here: http://www.losslessaudioblog.com/wmpmce-lossless-guide/

Now the files appear in WMP 11, but the only sound that I get out of it is static, and althoguh the album is visible on the XBOX, it won't play any of the songs.

Is it even possible to play FLAC files on the XBOX 360?

Running windows XP Pro, fyi.

Thanks for any help or insight.

i dont think its possible to play flac nativly on the 360 but is possible with a program like TVersity i dont know about 5.1 though, i guess you just have to suck it and see with the different on-the-fly transcoding programs or alternativly transcode your flac's to wmalossless

But will encoding it to WMA Lossless drop the 5.1? And if not, any tips for encoding from FLAC to WMA Lossless?

i don't use wma so i don't have a definitive answer but searching suggest that 5.1 should work fine, as for conversion dbpoweramp has a wmal plugin or you could try this but the info in the first post looks a bit out of date and may not be correct any more.

K, I dl the codec for dbPowerAmp (since I already use that), and I don't see an option for 5.1, only mono and stereo options at varying bitrates and qualities.

you have winamp 5.5 installed? it can also transcode to wmal (multichannel) here is an example of the settings it allows, the dropdown is covering a slider that will control size not quality, it does not change the text for that option when you switch from wma lossy to lossless. i have not tried this for wma but winamps transcoder works well enough for aac in my experience although its kinda slow on dual and quad core cpu's as it isn't mulitithreaded like foobars transcoder
