How to downmix 7.1 and 6.1 to 5.1

Hey guys,

I'm trying to figure out how to properly downmix 7.1 and 6.1 audio tracks to 5.1. I've checked what the Nero Audio decoder does when it downmixes a DTS-ES 6.1 track and it seems to do either "SL = 1.0 * SL + 0.7 * BC" or maybe it's "SL = 1.0 * SL + 0.707 * BC". Not totally sure.

For 7.1 downmixing would I also simply mix "SL = 1.0 * SL + 0.7 * BL"? Or do I need to do something different in that case?

Finally, do I need to check for clipping and adjust volume if there is clipping? Well, I think surround channels usually don't have such high volumes, so clipping is not that probable, but safe is safe, right?

Thanks for your help!!
