RealNetworks releases Helix DNA Server sources

From RealNetwork's website:

LinuxWorld, New York, January 22, 2003 — RealNetworks®, Inc., (Nasdaq: RNWK), the global leader in Internet media delivery, (Nasdaq: RNWK, Booth #363), today announced the third source code component of the Helix™ platform, the Helix DNA Server, is now available to software developers through the Helix Community at www.helixcommunity.org. With Helix DNA Server, developers for the first time have source code access to a major end-to-end media delivery platform, consisting of producer, server and client components. Helix DNA Server is the core source code of RealNetworks' Helix Universal Server, the 9th generation, multi-format digital media server that thousands of webcasters already use to deliver content on the Internet.

RealNetworks also announced that more than 10,000 software developers have joined the Helix Community since its launch in July, and that the Open Source Initiative (OSI) has certified the public source license used by the Helix Community.

"Today we deliver on the commitment we made in July to create a complete, open media delivery platform and source code community," said Rob Glaser, founder and CEO, RealNetworks, Inc. "With 10,000 members and proven foundational technology, the Helix Community is ready to take flight!"

Helix DNA Server source code will enable developers to build multi-format products for live and on-demand streaming, web collaboration, mobile media delivery, in-home streaming, and many other applications. Helix DNA Server streams MP3, RealAudio® and RealVideo®. RealNetworks intends to add support for MPEG-4 after the MPEG-4 systems license terms have been released by the MPEG-4 licensing body, MPEG LA. Developers can create extensions for other media types such as Windows Media and QuickTime, or they can license these extensions from RealNetworks through the Helix Community. The Helix DNA Server is available for AIX, HP-UX, Tru64, FreeBSD, Linux, Solaris, Windows NT and Windows 2000 operating systems.

Helix DNA Server is the third release of source code into the Helix Community. In October, RealNetworks released the Helix DNA Client source code, which enables developers to build playback applications that support any format. In December, RealNetworks released the Helix DNA Producer, which enabled developers to build encoding applications that support any format. The Helix platform has already received wide industry support form the likes of Cisco, HP, IBM, Network Appliance, nCUBE, Nokia, Oracle, PalmSource, Pinnacle Systems, Red Hat, Sun Microsystems, Symbian, Virage, Volera and many others.

Video testimonials supporting the Helix DNA Server from Cisco, HP, and Red Hat are available at www.helixcommunity.org

Sorry, i just must say this....no offence to any of you guys.

[span style='font-size:11pt;line-height:100%']Anyone who supports anything related to Real Networks is a LAMER!!![/span]
DO NOT support their CRAP!!!!!
Please, how IDIOTIC need you be to not understand how completely EVIL Real is?!?!...
I HATE Real!!! And frankly, i think you should too..

Since i didn't get much sleep the last 3 days or so, i actually considered installing a hacked Real codecs package that will allow me to use real media without needing Real software, i checked the .reg file (which was over 350k is size!) and there were entries i didn't like, like for "RealJukeBox" and stuff, so didn't install it.
Now, i'm a little more clear, and I AM ASHAMED of even considering installing the codecs!!!
So, damn it, Real is evil, even if it's completely safe, i won't install it, or anything that's related to Real! EVER!
[/end anger]

You need to take a coffee and engage brain (but since you say you haven't had sleep much in 3 days, that's understandable!  ).

Your rant is against the Real One Player, which I agree is a rather evil application (spyware, invasiveness, extension stealing, etc). I'm sure however, that a more mature argument that one that involves the words "lamer", "idiotic" and "crap" would be appreciated.

However, their DNA technology is a different kettle of fish. Firstly, it's open source. Secondly, there's nothing stopping any competent developer from building a proper, well-behaved (non-spyware) player on top of their DNA client playback engine. DNA Client is conceptually no different from the Mozilla Gecko HTML rendering engine used a variety of web browsers (or the KHTML rendering engine used in Apple's Safari).

As for DNA Server, I haven't examined it personally, but given the rather moribund state of IceCast, another open source media server couldn't hurt.

So, chill and be cool.

yeah..definately...

However, i still think whoever supports Real stuff is a "lamer", who is "idiotic", who supports "crap", definately.

The fact it's open source means nothing. Doesn't mean it's good. So instantly anything that's "open source" = good? no.

Yes it is different. it's license is nothing like Mozilla's, and other hundreds of thousands of open source projects that use BSD, GPL, LGPL, and more, licences. Previous licenses mentioned = GOOD,
Real's = REAL's.

Obviously I have to repeat what I said, or I wasn't clear enough (although this should be clear without saying).

News post on the frontpage, meaning, the first post of a thread in the validated news -forum are subjected to possible immediate editing. Those first posts are news, appearing on the portal frontpage. News are not for personal opinions, and news may need to be edited because of layout reasons etc.
That's why members need to post the news first to the "news submission" -forum. The following posts after the first news post are just normal forum messages which are not edited (unless there's a specific reason like illegal warez link), and where you can express your opinions about the news all you want, although it is appreciated if opinions are expressed in civilized manner - not like SK1 did in this thread.

Developers can post directly to the validated news -forum about their software announcements. They usually understand without saying what news are for, are what they are not for.
