iPod Sound Check w/ MP3Gain'd MP3's

Hi,

I recently got an iPod and I've been experimenting playing some of my MP3 files with it.

The way I currently have my MP3's set up is with MP3Gain (89 track gain) applied to each file. This has worked well to eliminate clipping in Winamp and on MP3 CD's that I've played on an MP3 boombox.

I just did a quick test with iPod's Sound Check using MP3Gain'd files as follows:

1)Made 2 copies of the same exact audio file, named one "hi" and one "lo"

2)Mp3 track gained "hi" to 89

3)Mp3 track gained "lo" to 75

4)Played them back in iTunes with Sound Check off. They played the same as they did in Winamp with a huge noticeable volume difference

5)Played them back in iTunes with Sound Check on. They both played louder but there was still large difference in volume ("hi" still played back much louder)

6)Played them back on my iPod with Sound Check on. Still a large difference in volume ("hi" played back much louder)

I'm not sure exactly what is happening, but the volume is definitely NOT being equalized on MP3 Gained files played with iPod's Sound Check.

Has anyone here messed with this any?

If so, which did you find to produce more consistent volumes on the iPod: a)Sound Check with no Mp3Gain OR b)Mp3Gain with no Sound Check?

Thanks
