You can play them by using something called "Quicktime Alternative" which will install a QT codec that can be used by Direct X apps.

It can be downloaded for free here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickT...Alternative.htm

However, it seems that there is very little information about who is behind it and about the project in general even though it is updated very regularly.

I think it's meant to work best with Media Player Classic, which if I recall correctly comes bundled with Real Alternative.  It's like a lightweight version of WiMP - not a lot of bells & whistles (not a lot of bloat either) but it can play just about anything.  From what I've observed people who like Foobar as an audio player seem to like Media Player Classic for video.
